Beggar Prince

If you don't know what this is, it's a Genesis RPG that was released back in May. Yes, of this year.

I've known about it for some time, but was never sure I wanted to plunk down $46 including shipping for it. I questioned its compatibility, Sega doesn't seem to have licensed it, and it didn't sound like that special an RPG.

Well, today I looked it up on eBay and found somebody auctioning it off with a Buy It Now of $200. I went back to the official site to see if they were still selling it, and they were. They also had pictures of the packaging and running on a Genesis, so I went ahead and bought it.

Wikipedia said there's a glitch that can corrupt the game data, which made me a little uneasy. And the save doesn't work if there's anything like a 32x or SegaCD attached to your Genesis, but I don't even own either of those. But it is an interesting piece of video game history (I think this is the first time a discontinued system got a game released for it after so long), so even if I have problems with it I should be able to live it down.

If you're interested, you can order it here.

I think it was just released this year. It's a translation of some other game AFAIK.

Yeah, the game was made back in the 16-bit era, it just hadn't been translated and released stateside until this year.

My copy just arrived. I haven't tested it yet, so basically I'm ranting about the packaging.

The shipping was ridiculous. They wrapped it in about four layers of newspaper, but put it in this massive box that still allowed the game to go flying around.

The box? It had no sealing on it. The paper insert looks like it was printed out on a computer (which it probably was). The plastic outside is super slick, unlike the standard Genesis case which has a textured plastic outside. The clips on the right side don't quite hold the cartridge right.

The manual is okay, but the design of the case that holds it is seriously screwed up. Wheras standard Genesis games have two notches on the top and bottom of the case and two bumps on the case to hold the manual, it has some kind of slot you're supposed to slide it into, but the manual often gets snagged on the holes under the notches protruding from the top and bottom of the case.

The cartridge almost looks like an authentic Genesis game, except for some missing copyright information, the screws look different, and there's an indent on one of the sides (my guess is this has something to do with PAL, because I don't have a single other Genesis game with this indent). And it's got some scratches, I guess from where they loaded the cart to burn the game into it.

So, I gave it a shot.

The plot sucks, but I wasn't expecting much from a game that's The Prince and the Pauper on crack (I admit I've never read the book, but I don't think there's magic spells and dragons and cat people in it).

The battle system has a unique feature I haven't seen anywhere else. You have this meter that depletes when you use a command. Attack depletes a bit, Heal depletes a little, offensive magic depletes a lot. It also gradually depletes if you're not doing anything, so you have to make your choices fast. You can keep attacking several times in a row until that meter is completely gone, then its the enemies turn. The enemies all share a meter that's like yours, and they keep attacking until that meter's empty. This means you get hit as many times against one enemy as when there's six.

Every time I saved the graphics went a little buggy; some squares changed color for a brief moment.

I'm not sticking with this for the time being, though. I'm just not in the mood for an RPG.
