Axes usually require two hands, which sucks for defense. I mean, it's important to impress the cyber-babes, but it's no use to you when there's a bayonnet in your thorax.

Sorry, but axes are better than swords. Most RPG heroes nowadays are too stupid to use shields, so axes are the way to go. -CSM

Swords take a lot of skill to be able to use correctly. You can't just pick a sword up and start swinging it and be able to defeat someone with an axe. A skilled swordsman, however, can defeat an axeman any day. Good swordfights are more stylish, more mental, and have more finesse. Axes are just lazy.

But still, pole fighting kicks the most ass.

Depends on the context. I'd hardcore take an axe over a sword, for instance, if I were stuck in a mall with a horde of zombies. It's easier to kill a zombie with an axe; a solid blow to the head (even with the blunt side) should be sufficient to crush the beast's skull. With a sword, you'd probably have to go for a decapitation, which is trickier.

Modern-day firearms have replaced swords, axes, and lances entirely. And they don't take much practice to use! Just point at your target and pull the trigger...

At close ranges, guns aren't that great. The main strategy when you have a gun is to get outside of melee range and into firing range, and then fire.

Equal. Axes are much stronger and swords are a bit faster, but their lightweightness also serves as a disadvantage since it's harder to block stuff.
Swords win when it comes to looking good, but I'd say katars, polearms, and a few other types of melee weapons look better.
