Best RPGs ever made? - Page 4

The earliest RPG I know of is Ultima. It was around in the early 80s for the Apple IIe.

The first RPG ever made is chess because of it's RPGish elements like changing the pawn's job whenever it reaches the other side of the playing field. It may not have level ups, magic or stats; but it's the 1st RPG.

I am still trying to figure that one out, but I think I better side with Douglas.EXE (Jet).

Chess... well, my current standards for an RPG are "If the back of the box says its an RPG, it's an RPG," so no.

-A Genius (And if it was an RPG, didn't Checkers come first? Checkers sucks, but I'm pretty sure Chess came after it.)

The reason why chess is a RPG is because it's fantasy and the units have certain ways of attacking other units which provided strengths and weaknesses for each unit. It was even more organized then most of the games out there when it came out and strategy has always been a part of RPGs, so in a way, it's the 1st RPG.

Also, chess is to Fire Emblem as Checkers is to Advance wars.

And Chess...

a) Wasn't fantasy when it was made... and it still isn't really, not like there's dragons or whatever, besides fantasy does not an RPG make
b) May be strategic, but again just because many RPGs have strategy doesn't make all strategy games RPGs. Is Age of Kings an RPG? No.
c) ROLE PLAYING GAME. You do not "ROLE PLAY" in chess. Case closed.
