If you're a player, you only need a player's hand book. If you plan on being a DM you'll also need a Dungeon master guide and a monster manual. The books are around $30 each and book stores like borders or barnes & nobles usually carry them. You'll also need a set of dice (4 sided, 6 sided, 8 sided, 10 sided, 12 sided and 20 sided. |

Either you buy a rulebook or you won't play, nobodies going to waste time writing all the rules up, not to mention all the spells and classes. If money is an issue though, I suggest pooling your money with your friends' so you can buy atleast two Handbooks and a Dungeon Masters Guide. This will set you for a couple sessions at least. |

This site doesn't contain everything, but it does contain a lot of the required information in the three core rulebooks.
