I support it, but with restrictions. It should be done at a mild level. It shouldn't leave lasting wounds. And it shouldn't be done after third grade--when hormones start kicking in, things get a bit complicated, and the physical contact gets a little too awkward.

But it's definitely necessary. I've stayed in contact with a lot of my elementary school teachers, and they're exhausted. I don't have my license, so I've had to take the bus home from school every afternoon for a couple of years. Believe me. Kids are obnoxious. They have no fear or respect for their elders whatsoever.

Not sure. I've never had any sort of that punishment except for time out and/or a scolding. This usually whipped me back into shape without any actual physical contact needed.

^^ Yeah, I know the feeling (my nephews are TEH EVAL) but usually, if I yell at them when they've done something bad, they never do that bad thing again.

I'm a little iffy on this subject, though. I MIGHT get into teaching and honestly, I don't trust myself with corporal punishment. I'm afraid I might hurt the childs a little too much.

Yeah, if my child got in trouble I'd rather deal with him myself.

If it's explicitely permitted by the parents...sure. All for it. Hell yeah.

Otherwise...well, parents are perfectly and completely capable of spanking their kids.

What can the teacher do if the parents DON'T properly discipline their children? A misbehaved student is a distraction to the rest of the class as well as to the teacher him/herself.

I would sort of reverse what Wyborn said and say that corporal punishment should be avoided only if the parents explicitly disallow it on their child.

^ That's why I say, if you can't get 'em in order, chuck 'em out. I wish my school had a policy of throwing out bullies, clowns, and neer-do-wells. Of course, you ask: Where do you send them?
