You go to school, and there's not enough desks in the classroom for all the students, meaning some students will have to stand. Many students, not wanting to stand the entire period, leave the class and go somewhere else. How about textbooks? There are even less of them than there are desks, meaning that a gorup of 4 or 5 students will be sharing the same book." Here's an idea: instead of shutting schools down, like Bush's "No Child Left Behind," how about increasing funding for public schools? The former idea will lead to larger classes and less available resources, prompting more students to drop out of school and fall into the great American trap, which is largely overlooked by the media, whereas the latter idea would help make the learning environment better, increase hope in our youth, and decrease the amount of people leaving school for lives of crime. |

It's so serious that it's said that education in poor areas have been set back by about 100 years. At least in East St. Louis, anyway. .... Cholera breaks out over there, for God's sake. CHOLERA. *will write more when she's not so tired* |

Jesus Tapdancing Christ, Savage Inequalities was written in the 80's and you're telling me that changes haven't been done over in East St. Louis since then? ![]() [ October 25, 2004, 01:35 AM: Message edited by: Bad Andi ] |

Government policies are involved, and funding would have to be drawn from from somewhere else. In my home state of Michigan, for example, we had a crippling state debt. As a result, we had to cut huge amounts of school funding. Around 50% of school funding comes from state governments, the rest from property taxes (and a wee bit from Uncle Sam) One way to help would be to pass a law demanding all schools recieve equal funding - forcing states to even out funding between ridiculously wealthy districts and completely impoverished ones. |

(God, did I just say "har"?) Anyway I know, it's crazy, but we should have the taxes back. Increasing taxes/salary is better because the people with more money are giving more back to the community than someone who doesn't have as much money is doing. Let me put it this way: Tax cuts are good, but that means that less funding is going to our schools, and public sports recreation and funding. Besides TV and inside things, children don't really go and play activites as often because, either, everyone doesn't agree, or there is no support for them to go and play with other kids their age, solely because of money. Now, compared to a lot of otehr schools in the state, my school and the ones around the county, are pretty fortunate, these are about the dumbest chairmen and treasurers I've ever heard of. They spent hundreds of dollars from school funding, to rework their office, new chairs, and everything. |

I know about it, 'cause I study in there. (And I visit silly videogame forums all the while.) When the principal election was held, the actual principal didn't even have 4% of votes. Yet he's the actual principal, somehow. And the government is letting him be there. Taxes aren't fixing the situation either. The tax rates skyrocket, yet the situation isn't improving... I mean, if people are paying their taxes, where the heck is that money? MY university has stuff in crap state, and people are supposed to be paying to fix it! Worse than all, the aforementioned principal has the plan to eliminate all careers and leave the university with just postgraduate programs that cost a buck. That accomplishes 2 things: 1. Destroying the best (and still the cheapest) programs in the country. 2. Turning the university into a private business. I don't like my government at all. |
