True, No Child Left Behind didn't exactly work. But should that mean that national education standards are no go?

I'm a bit split on this. Yes, national standards COULD mean that teachers would be less flexible. But really...the VERY disproportionate education standards between the different states...it's just unfair, you know?

I honestly don't agree with a federal Board of Education at all. However, to suggest a compromise to the issue of having some federal regulation without federal mandates, what I think should be done is to have federal suggestions and guidance about what should be taught in schools but not have any federal mandate (read: national standardised test) to enforce it. Thus, along with school vouchers and whatnot, kids should be able to go to schools that support the federal suggestions.
