I heard somewhere that they're re-designing the national public school year. They're getting rid of summer vacation, and they're going to have classes all year round, but with several short winter/spring-breakish vacations scatted throughout the year.

What would you prefer? The system as it is now, or a new one?

It's an alright system. Several times I wish I could just have a week off, but I'd still prefer summer vacation.

It really sucks for people who need to get a lot of hours of work in during summer for college/university. (More full-timers off then)

I do see and agree with your points. But it wouldn't be all bad. The only reason why they gave us summer vacation was because, when we were a rural society, kids were needed to take care of the family crops. Now we can depend on machinery to do our labor for us. Unfortunately, if something were to happen and we lost it as far as technology goes, we'd be in trouble re-adjusting our school/work calendar.

But isn't it pretty difficult to adjust to a new school year? It would be much easier to get re-focused on academics if you didn't have a long break to let your brain melt.

They've been talking about this since I was in school. My only problem with this is the hideous air conditioning leading to an unpleasant and thus unproductive learning environment. It might also present some babysitting issues.

Otherwise, it's good because kids won't need to spend the first two months relearning what they forgot over the summer, and I would think smaller breaks would be beneficial as well.

Lets just all give a big up yours for the insanely uptight congressman who lower funding for schools and decide to make flirting a form of sexual harassment at work.

Several short breaks? You mean, like, two week breaks. Heck, doesn't sound too different to the deal we have in Britain. We only get a month off at summer at least.

Erm. Not sure how long you guys get off.

Hawaii has many holidays, so we already get alot of short breaks.

I think they even made up a snow day up here once.
How they did that is beyond me.

It should be a heat day (errr no)

In places like CA (where most of my family lives)
they go three months of school, then get a month off, and repeat that all year.

My dad said that we would get alot more done if there were no breaks that we went to school every day (Even Saturday and Sunday) all year round.

If they seriously did that, then expect a nation-wide strike led by the Teachers. The only reason they add some breaks is to keep us from going on strike
