It was the first day of 11th grade, and it went well. First period, I was half-asleep, barely paying any attention. It felt like a seamless transition from last year's monotony. Then, second period. Same thing. I almost fell asleep. Then, lo and behold, the teacher gives us a "get to know your classmates" paper (you know, get a signature from someone who's left-handed, one who speaks a foreign language, one who swing dances). I always just slide those into my binder and doodle in my notebook instead. I did just that. But then, for some strange reason, I thought something. **** it. I wasn't going to be a recluse, that shy kid in the corner of the classroom anymore. **** it. I got up, and got the entire thing signed. For the first time in my twelve years of school. And I had a good time. Then, third period came. The teacher was reading off names. He said, "If any of you have any nicknames or anything you'd like to be called by, now would be the time to tell me." Then, he jokingly suggested "Starshine Windjammer" as a nickname. So, my name came up, and I got that feeling again. "Robert Ryan?" "Starshine Windjammer, please." And everybody laughed. So did the teacher. So did I. After than, he asked, "Okay, 'Starshine', is it just Robert or Bob or something shorter?" I replied, "No, just Starshine." And everyone laughed again. I actually got into some conversations with people over it. Even later, in seventh period, the teacher said, "Hey, Robby! Good to see you!" (He was my Creative Writing teacher in the 9th grade) "Do you still go by 'Robby', or something different?" I said "Starshine." Everybody laughed again. All in all, it was a good day. But I digress, this topic is to discuss my plans for my life. I've been thinking about what I'm going to do once I grow up. These past few weeks, I've had something in mind, and I've come to a decision. After all, in two days, I'll be turning 17, and I really feel the need to start carrying my own weight. Basically, I want to drop out of school and get a G.E.D. instead. School is moving way too slow for me. It's just relearning the same old **** over and over again, and I don't feel like doing it for two more years (even if it is just two more years). School's always been too slow for me. I'm going to try and leave school, and just get my G.E.D. For those of you who don't know, a G.E.D. is just as worthy as a highschool diploma, and it's usually taken by adults who didn't finish high school. There'd be no downside as to choosing a G.E.D. over a diploma. Also, I'm getting my license, and a full-time job. Don't think I just decided this, I've been thinking about it for months. I've been reading classified ads, looking for job openings, researching what sort of career steps I could try and take. It's been a lot of hard work, and I don't know if I come off to you guys as this kind of responsible person, but I feel like finally growing up. I've talked about it with my parents, I've gone through it plenty of times, I'm saving up money, I've got a structure built, and I'm hoping it will work. If my parents are fine with it, then I guess it's into adulthood I go. I don't think I put everything into this post that I should have (I know I'm forgetting something), but I hope you all get the main idea. Finally, I'd like to thank you all here for helping me break out of my social shell. You've all really helped. K thx, peace out. |

I've seen people drop out and get a GED, but I saw some of them never go through with it. But, if you are adamant about it, you'll follow through. Good luck. | |

You obviously put a lot of time and effort into this to make it work. I think you're being tremendously responsible and I applaud you for it. It's nice to see you doing what you love. I met all of my friends by randomly talking to them. It's nice to hear that you had a nice day. Carry those skills that you just made into the workforce. They are very valuable. In one of my classes Freshmen year, I just walked up to this kid I didn't know, shook his hand, and said, "Hi, my favorite color is orange, what's yours?" We've been friends ever since. |
