Was Palpatine faking?

In the scene in ROTS where Palpatine and Mace duel, do you think Palpatine deliberately lost his lightsaber to appear weak when Anakin showed up? I mean the man took down 3 Jedi Masters and then held his own, but notice that he doesn't lose his lightsaber until Anakin has already entered the building.

Do you think Palpatine sensed Anakin and lost his lightsaber to make it seem like the Jedi were trying to take over the Republic or do you think Mace really beat him out in the duel?

Mace really beat him out in the duel by doing what the other Jedi's did not...use the darkside of the Force against him. The Lightsaber form that Mace uses would have allowed him to turn the superior power of Palpatine against him enough to give him the upper hand. Though to be honest I do not think that Palpatine was going all out like when he battled Yoda. I think he knew Anakin was coming and there for did not display his full power, I don't think he was relying on Anakin to save him, I just don't see a man of that evil hesitating to smash the one Jedi and show his new student how powerful the Dark Side can truly be.

Palpatine needed Anakin to see for himself that the Jedi were reckless. That's why he was constantly saying "don't kill me, i'm too weak." Then Mace says "He's too dangerous to be kept alive", just like when Palpatine said that to Anakin about Dooku.

I believe that Palpatine deliberately lost his lightsaber because he sensed Anakin coming. And he was also faking when he said "I'm too weak". There was no way he was going down.

One of the many great things of Star Wars...it allows the fans to create thoughts and theories for themselves to fill in some plotholes.

^ exactly, for me I like to think that palpatines plans were to vital to put into the single actions of a Jedi. Up untill that moment he had no way of knowing whether or not the fickel Anakin would trully join his cause...for all he knows, Anakin could have let Mace kill him. Though seeing as he was able to use the Darkside to tap into the future he actually could have known that he would be able to sway Anakin over to his cause....hmmmm

yeah that image was too much to continually look at

Palpatine killed the other Jedi in the room so fast because none of them were any good with a saber. Mace, on the other hand, was one of the best, and quite frankly, I think his only mistake was letting Anakin and Palpatine keep yammering before ending the shriveled demon. Yes, I think Palpatine was faking to an extent, but had Anakin not interfered, Palpatine would not have been able to stop Mace's final strike.

And remember, "I'm-a Luigi, number one!"
