The Lando Thread

Okay, I heard this discussion going on not too long ago, and it made me decide to post this thread...

Did Lando Calrissian betray his friends? Was he a backstabber, or was he doing the only thing he could? What do you think?

Personally, I think his character's been maligned just because of something he did because he had to. The Empire had his hands tied behind his back, and it was either give up his friends, or endanger thousands of innocent lives in his city. The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few, or the one. And besides, Lando saved Han in the next movie anyways and then blew up the Death Star, so I think he's more than atoned for his sins.

Share your thoughts.

The way I think of it, it was his choice to do either, but due to what he did later, it seems natural that his decision was done with the future already planned for, so he doesn't deserve to be called a simple backstabber just because he had to betray them once.

I think he started off as a jerk, and then he redeemed himself, so... yes to both poll options.

Also, I want to mention that I liked Wayne Brady's impersonation of Lando Calrissian in Whose Line Is It Anyway?

I think he did the best he could. He saved the people of his city, and the deal he negotiated with the empire would have at least kept his friends safe. When Vader endangered his friends by altering the deal, Lando didn't stand for it and went to save them himself. He totally should have explained his plan before uncuffing the vengeful wookie, though.

Yeah but I did like Chewy's reaction to Lando saving him. Still Lando is a schemer he new that if he did what he did he could rescue them and his people in the future. He had no choice either. As a leader he had to choose his people over his friends. Its his sworn duty.

He and Han had quite the history, but the only reason he did it was to save Cloud City and at least try to do as little harm as possible to Han and co.

Well Lando was obviously tricked. He hates the Empire, and always will. He's just always been one to make shady deals; that's just the nature of the character. -CSM

He had to, if Vader showed up and said "gimme your friend or your people die" I'd sure as hell give up my friends.

It's the only thing a leader could do.
