Some "fun" Science-related things everyone should know...

Do you know the answers to the following? Give a True or False answer...

1. Glass is actually a viscous liquid and not a solid.

2. Chidren have fewer bones in their growing bodies than adults.

3. A cricket has their ears just below their knees, on their legs..

4. Sound travels slower in water than in air!

5. Every known type of acid will dissolve glass.

6. A mosquito actually has teeth!

7. Diamonds are made solely of carbon.

8. The moon is nearly 45% of the earth's size.

9. The only letter not appearing in the Periodic Table is the letter "J".

10. Starfish (sea stars) have three brains to control their arms.

We could easily search these, but I will take educated guesstimations.

1. Glass is actually a viscous liquid and not a solid.
True
2. Chidren have fewer bones in their growing bodies than adults.
False - Wait, do teeth count as bones?
3. A cricket has their ears just below their knees, on their legs..
True
4. Sound travels slower in water than in air!
False
5. Every known type of acid will dissolve glass.
False
6. A mosquito actually has teeth!
True - Kind of.
7. Diamonds are made solely of carbon.
True
8. The moon is nearly 45% of the earth's size.
False
9. The only letter not appearing in the Periodic Table is the letter "J".
True - Unless one of the new ones has a 'J' in it.
10. Starfish (sea stars) have three brains to control their arms.
False - They do not have any brains right? Just a few nerve bundles.

Time for AP Biology to pay off... Kind of.

1. Glass is actually a viscous liquid and not a solid.
I'm guessing false, as any solid substance has a melting point, and glass's is way above room temperature.
2. Chidren have fewer bones in their growing bodies than adults.
False, they have more, it's just that they mend together.
3. A cricket has their ears just below their knees, on their legs..
I'm going out on a limb and saying true.
4. Sound travels slower in water than in air!
False, the wavelength properties allow water to actually be an excellent carrier of sound waves.
5. Every known type of acid will dissolve glass.
Absolute false. After all, fruit juice is slightly acidic and my glass hasn't dissolved.
6. A mosquito actually has teeth!
Tough one. I'm making an educated guess on this. Since mosquitoes are part of the Insect Kingdom, which is not part of the whole Vertabrae phylum (Which is where we see the evolution of the hinged jaw), I may have to say false, but I could be wrong.
7. Diamonds are made solely of carbon.
True, true, and more true. Get me Carbon-60 and you'll have one of the strongest substances ever, with the atoms in the form of a soccer ball!
8. The moon is nearly 45% of the earth's size.
False, it has to be smaller than that.
9. The only letter not appearing in the Periodic Table is the letter "J".
Just like the Gadsby and the E. True.
10. Starfish (sea stars) have three brains to control their arms.
Starfish I know for sure are very basic animals, so I'm guessing false, only because of the whole sessile movement.

Arrow whee

1. Glass is actually a viscous liquid and not a solid.
False. I consider it more of an amorphous solid. There's no evidence that glass flows as a liquid.

2. Chidren have fewer bones in their growing bodies than adults.
False. I think they have more, as plates in the skull fuse during childhood.

3. A cricket has their ears just below their knees, on their legs..
True. I remember a humourous picture of a cricket with headphones on its legs.

4. Sound travels slower in water than in air!
False. Water is much denser and thus transmits waves faster.

5. Every known type of acid will dissolve glass.
False. An acid is not caustic by virtue of being an acid; it depends on the radical bound to hydrogen. Hydrofluoric acid is very reactive, but hydrolic acid (water) is not. Glass (as silicon dioxide), a non-polar molecule, is not readily dissolved in water.

6. A mosquito actually has teeth!
False. Teeth, as defined as bones. They do have tiny ridges, but I don't think that counts.

7. Diamonds are made solely of carbon.
False. In reality, diamonds have impurities which give it distinct chemical properties. This is one reason diamonds are difficult to use as a fungible commodity. The diamond cartel has tried to make a system to assign value, but in reality, diamonds having value are a big hoax.

8. The moon is nearly 45% of the earth's size.
Uh... False. Probably not in volume, that would be ridiculous.

9. The only letter not appearing in the Periodic Table is the letter "J".
Now that I think about it, sure. True.

10. Starfish (sea stars) have three brains to control their arms.
False. Not brains, per se, just large nerve clusters. Considering that there are hundreds of varieties of sea stars, it's unlikely they all have three clusters.

Time for my useless knowledge to become known.

1. Glass is actually a viscous liquid and not a solid.
(T; can't remember when I found this out, but the glass drips very slowly downwards, after loads of years, you'll eventually have a thicker bottom part of the sheet of glass than the top part.)
2. Chidren have fewer bones in their growing bodies than adults.
(F; children have more bones, as they get older, some bones fuse together.)
3. A cricket has their ears just below their knees, on their legs..
(T; can't remember when I heard this)
4. Sound travels slower in water than in air!
(T; sound needs air to travel, and water has very little air in it.)
5. Every known type of acid will dissolve glass.
(F ?)
6. A mosquito actually has teeth!
(F ?)
7. Diamonds are made solely of carbon.
(T)
8. The moon is nearly 45% of the earth's size.
(F; 1/3)
9. The only letter not appearing in the Periodic Table is the letter "J".
(T.)
10. Starfish have three brains to control their arms.
(F ?. Has more braincells.)

1. Glass is actually a viscous liquid and not a solid.
False. That materials class I took was good for something.
2. Chidren have fewer bones in their growing bodies than adults.
I'd guess false.
3. A cricket has their ears just below their knees, on their legs..
Sounds like it would be true.
4. Sound travels slower in water than in air!
False, I think. The denser the medium, the faster sound should travel through it.
5. Every known type of acid will dissolve glass.
Guessing false on this one.
6. A mosquito actually has teeth!
False.
7. Diamonds are made solely of carbon.
True
8. The moon is nearly 45% of the earth's size.
False. I think it's smaller.
9. The only letter not appearing in the Periodic Table is the letter "J".
True, because I actually looked for letters not appearing in the PT once.
10. Starfish (sea stars) have three brains to control their arms.
It's my understanding that starfish have no brains.
