AMD will have to work hard to make these 64s more appealing to the mass market, especially considering what is going on over at the Intel camp. Intel is set to release the long awaited Prescott line of Pentium 4s next month, likely with a clock speed of 3.4 GHz. They also hope to break the 4 GHz speed before the end of the year. The Prescott line is also set to be bad news for AMD's tradition price advantage, as Intel is rumored to be setting the Prescotts at the same price as the current high-end Pentium 4s. AMD's launch of the 3400+ brings the total amount of their 64-bit processors up to 4. (The Athlon 64 3000+, 3200+, 3400+, and the FX-51.) They also have just brought out their new core, Newcastle in the 3000+ AMD 64 processor. [ January 06, 2004, 05:59 PM: Message edited by: Link2000 ] |

| Guest Posts: n/a | http://www.anandtech.com/cpu/showdoc.html?i=1941 Here are some benchmarks of the Athlon 3400+. I hope that this website is right saying that this means the death of the FX-51. It makes no sence having another processor line going. (Thus using another kind of socket) Too bad AMD still plans to release at least one more FX line processor (The FX53) AMD's 64s win most of the benchmarks if you're too lazy to look. | Guest Posts: n/a | Remember kiddies! 64 bit doesn't mean that it's faster. It just means that the CPU can handle numbers over four billion without having to do any fancy tricks. Among other things, this means that programs can use a lot more RAM if you install an OS which is up to the job. That said, the Athlon 64 is fast. |
