Considering the first one was great fun, that should'nt be too hard. The reason everyone whines about it is because it had a steep learning curve, which is bull.
Keep playing, and you'll get better at it, unless you want a piss easy game that you can completely beat in four hours.

I still find it completely inane to suggest that Sonic needs anything other than his own two feet to win a race.

Well at least it is'nt like the Game Gear Sonic Drift titles, where Sonic raced in a car of all things. XD
