Hatch thing on side of Sega Genesis, what does it do?

I was looking at my Genesis today and saw a hatch on the bottom. When I opened it there was this red thing that said "DO NOT REMOVE". Does anyone know what that is for or why its there?

Obviously, it's there for you to not remove.

It is the only thing sealing hell from the real world. Remove it, and Judgment day will begin! Ahhhh!!!!

Are you serious?

It's for a memory cartridge. They're more reliable than saving on the system's battery.

Also, you can plug a Sega Netlink (a modem) into it and surf the internet.

Very slowly.

Ohhh yeah. I've always wondered what it'd be like to play Saturn Bomberman online.

Wasn't there a Game Genie for the Saturn that used the slot, too?

Yeppers!

And the side-hatch on the Genesis served several purposes... supposedly. In the end, all it was good for was confusing people, but there had been plans for a modem and several other peripherals, much like the Sega CD that plugged in to the *other* side of the console. Unfortunately, none of them went through, so there's just this extra bit. Whee?
