| Senior Member | Maybe I should start calling you NegativeNancy instead of I_A_N The more you say "THIS FORUM IS DEAD! THIS FORUM IS DEAD!" The more it will be. MAKE TOPIC! POST! Don't even THINK about thinking about how the Forum is dead, and keep making fun topics, and it will flouish. |

I don't forsee it becoming active until the site gets some help; I tried, but it doesn't seem to want to be fixed. *Crosses arms* Hmph. |

| Senior Member Join Date: Apr 2000 Location: Gender: Posts: 7,034 Thanks: 77 Thanked 265 Times in 175 Posts | The review of that game I made. The mailbag postings. The Mario merchandise things. All was going fine until I moved towards the heart of the site, and then Sean got mad. I'd rather the site die an advertisingy death after a few more months of Sean's updates than cause a bunch of drama over an old Mario site and potentially make a mess. Sean'll probably delete this topic and/or this post anyway. I explained my position in the IRC room before. Sean wants his layout, I want the pre-Sean layout. Sean wants his browser-slaying navbar, I want the older one. I want less ads, Sean wants more. Sean updates often, wheras I prefer giant chunks of updates. If anyone actually wants me to contribute to SMBHQ more often, then we need an actual mediator and a neutral person to determine the fair and square deal of things. I'm not gonna create a big fight over nothing. SMBHQ wasn't founded by me; if you, Jay, and Kyle truly believe the way Sean does things is the SMBHQ way, I won't interfere. As for activity in this forum, it's tied into what I just said; if people had much to see at SMBHQ, odds are they'd talk in here. But they don't. So why talk in here? (And there's not much of a prominent link to here from SMBHQ anyway) |

However, based on what I have seen, you really do seem like you're all talk and no action. You spend more of your time complaining about Sean than actually doing something for the site. That is not productive at all. Complaining is not trying. If you want to do something, then DO something. Sorry, but like I said, I really want to help support you. I've already told you in the SSSRPGio chat many things that you can do. I've given you many solutions. I've given you many ideas. I've given you my total, 100% support. But what I'm not seeing are any updates. I'm not seeing you try. And if you are trying, then I'm sure not seeing any results.-jay | |

| Godly Member | Sadly, SMBHQ has gone down the drain. The current layout of SMBHQ.com has become messy and disorganized with infrequent updates. The website was at it's prime when Jay, Sean, and Kyle were younger and had more free time. Now that they are adults in the working world they don't have as much time to fix the site, although it seems like Kyle Orland has a really cushy job reviewing video games. |

Don't assume so much. Quote:
MetalMan, I think it has been established with you that you stubbornly use out-of-date web browsers. The site works fine with the latest versions of both Firefox and I.E. As for the layout, I have been trying for something simple that doesn't take up much space. I thought it was going to be a good idea to combine the main page layout with the navbar. If people don't like it, I'll try something else. However, the era pages are staying. Quote:

Let me tell you a story (it should shed some light I why I don't like MetalMan much these days). Around this time last year, Kyle was really complaining to me that I wasn't updating often enough. I was really busy and I was only doing 1-2 updates a month. Fast forward to March. MetalMan comes in like the saviour saying that he will do more frequent updates to the site. Kyle makes him a co-webmaster and we have a group chat in AIM. One of the points Kyle makes is that he wants frequent updates (at least once a week). I am doubtful that I would be able to update that often, and after talking about it to Kyle, we decide that I should step down. The next day, I talk to my mom (of all people) about how I am no longer working on the site and I how I will be no longer getting a share of the ad revenue (which was/is my only source of income). My mom convinces me that I DO have time to update the site on a weekly basis and I tell Kyle that I decided to stay. So, now I am committed. I make it a point to have at least one update on the site each week, no matter how small. I create many new game pages for the era pages, new mailbags, new products, new links (a favourite if I'm really pressed for time), and whatever I can think of. Now, I'm working harder on the site than I have ever worked in years. In the last 8 months, I posted 37 updates for SMBHQ, compared to the 21 updates I posted for the entire year of 2006. How many updates did MetalMan post? 4. Now, that forth update is where we had our second falling out (the first was when he removed SSQ from SMBHQ in protest over KYLE adding intelliTXT ads). I don't want to go into details, but it involved him not like era pages, subdirectories, and stuff like that. I don't like being looked at as a tyrant. Anything I do for the site I believe is for the best. I know that I am not a teenager any more. However, I believe I am better equipped to run SMBHQ now, then I did when I was 16 (especially since I now hold a diploma in Computer Programming). I want to listen to your suggestions, but no one is making an effort to ask. MetalMan is a prime example of this. Jay is right, he is all talk and no action. He loves complaining to his little SSQ buddies, but he never bothers to write an e-mail to me. I have listened to the complaints and I will try my best to fix them. I will work on getting a more simple main page up ASAP. I will get rid of the navbar (even though Kyle will probably not like that). I will continue trying to update SMBHQ once a week and I GUARANTEE you that it will be returned to it's former glory, by the time the site turns 11. Good Night. | Senior Member Join Date: Apr 2000 Location: Gender: Posts: 7,034 Thanks: 77 Thanked 265 Times in 175 Posts | Here's how it went down: Kyle wanted more frequent updates. I wanted to do them. Sean said he'd step down. All is good. I begin updating, starting with some minor sections. Nothing wrong. Then I attempt to make a more visible reviews section, and Sean locks me out from his contact list, throws me off the mailbag, and throws a giant hissy fit. His era system never made much sense, and in reality it'd be more logical if they just went by system. After all, the systems ARE the eras, not some random chunk of time. I stopped updating after that snapfest 'cause I figured that if I did anything major at all, Sean would pull the same thing again. Jay gave lots of vague 'I'll support you' motions, without saying what he'd support me for. The problem is that in order for me to be able to update the site more often, I want the content in question to be visible. Not just mine, but all the content. The era system has obfuscated content that was earlier much easier to reach. It was that SMBHQ which I was very willing to update, very often at that. However, I wouldn't have bothered even asking in the first place if I knew I'd have to put up with someone who explodes at any moment over changes to their pet layout. Wariovswario is right. Not about infrequent updates, but the fact it has so many dang ads everywhere. And the current layout is disorganized. And you like calling me all talk and no action, so I'll give you an offer that if you could get over your layout for a moment, would show you what I'm truly capable of. I posess the ability to code PHP, and at that, I could remodel the site entire with it. I already came up with ideas with a Mario products section with dynamically updatable content (Drop in a file with the name of the product, pictures with the name, and a description--voila, it adds it to the index of it, sorts it, etc.) Most importantly, a system-specific organization of pre-existing content, plus the creation of a PHP template of the game section's content (so that, whenever you do a layout change, it changes everything INSTANTLY), would allow both a neater organization of the site in general, and should the ads ever, ever be (hopefully) toned down, we could easily remove those too. Now, it's obvious you dislike me, Sean, so I'm just going to test this little about-face you claim to have. I'll make a proposed front page and navbar replacement set o' pages, and give them to you to comment on, and heck, I can even change them for you, if you'll just please banish the 'eras' in favor of a more centralized system-specific setup. I'd say I'd do more, but I've put my extra time into other sites, sites which do not bite me for trying to update them. The truth is, me and my 'SSQ buddies' moved on beyond this little spat. I only do not update the site because I am not interested in revisiting it again. However, if one could accept a simple compromise, we wouldn't have such a problem. And the whole tyrant thing, well, you've unilaterally destroyed or ignored my opinion every time I've mentioned it, so if you're sick of ibeing called a tyrant, perhaps you should be more tolerant of people with different opinions. 'Cause I've never been called a tyrant, and you know why? Even when you and others say things deeply offensive to me, I simply respond and let it roll. Meanwhile, a previous topic which was getting dangerously near to this issue was deleted, my review was crushed into a tiny box and edited, my review section was destroyed, past comments of mine have been deleted, you assume I have an old browser (and thus dismiss out of hand my complaints about your freaky-deaky DynamicDrive DHTML) when I actually have Firefox 3.0 Alpha, by which standards YOUR browser is old, so on and so forth. And if you don't like my idea, or any variant thereof, that's fine. I have other things to do in my life than debate a Mario website, and if it makes you happy to have control over one such as SMBHQ, I'm not gonna take that away from you. As for Kyle and the ads, well. I can't challenge that, that's his perogative. *shrugs* Additionally, if you quote bomb this message, then I'm going to assume you have no interest in what I say. It doesn't matter if I'm right or wrong, it matters if you're comfortable with me changing anything on the site at all. |

I don't need your design. The era pages are staying as they are. Each era is already based on the years a console dominated the market (i.e. the year's aren't random). I know PHP too and I also know the limitations of the server (i.e. nothing that requires MySQL) I bet you think your pretty smart saying you are using Firefox 3.0 Alpha. Truth is, you just proved to me that you are not that smart if you truly believe that it's the website's fault that your browser, which is not past the testing stage, crashes. I'm done with this matter. Goodbye. |

My heart burns from the deep wound which has been inflicted. I may not be able to continue living with the knowledge that Sean Kelly doesn't need my work. Argh! Augh! I am forever killed by the Sean Kelly's mighty blow. ... Look, all I was asking for was you consider an idea of mine. But I just thought up another one, which is pretty simple. You know what I want? I wanted Super Mario Bros Headquarters - The Home for Paisanos Everywhere! without the wackiness, and with the 'adjusted' eras you came up later that were slightly less strange. But I'm currently boggling over how it took you three hours to make that extremely simple layout. O_o |

It's because I put care and effort into what I do. I know there will always be people, who don't like what I do on SMBHQ. However, even though I will try to listen to all complaints, I am not going throw away three years of progress just because some people don't like it. Personally, if you don't like the site, there are many other Mario sites for you to go to. Like I'm said, I'm done with this issue and I'm closing this topic. |

MM, my support is exactly what it is. I trust you. I know you run a good ship with SSSRPGio. That's why I felt that you could really help SMBHQ. My support was constant. If you ever wanted me to help you with something, or wanted me to back you up, all you ever had to do was ask me or talk to me. That's what my support is. You just never chose to use that support. That isn't my fault. (That said, my support still stands. If you or Sean ever need my help or support for anything, all you ever have to do is talk to me.) Also, I feel you are simply completely off base here. I don't always agree with Sean. But I do know that he works hard and cares about SMBHQ. Your comments here are off base, inappropriate, and highly exaggerating. I know you and Sean may not get along, and you don't agree with a lot of Sean's decisions with the site, but it's a two way street. What you're doing isn't constructive or productive for the site. Anyway, I guess that's all I have to say about this. Personally, I just wish you both would just shut up and keep the interests of the site at heart. Me and Kyle worked hard to build SMBHQ up so many years ago. It doesn't deserve this kind of fighting now. SMBHQ is just a website. It's supposed to be fun. If it isn't fun, then just stop. That all said, Sean, I'm sorry, but the new layout is horrible. Heh. Just my opinion. Too much scrolling, too much white space. Personally, I feel like it's a step back. I'd take the previous layout over this. -jay |
