I think that's what's killing them, little kids aren't saving up their cash to get one like they are for the 360 or the Wii.
Yeah, I think if they were to go into the next generation they should make differing models.

One model has all those stuff that sends the price sky-high and another is meant for gaming and gaming purposes only. (With the possibility for addons like hard drives) Heck it's working for the 360 arcade, isn't it?

Besides, do you HAVE to have an HD TV to enjoy console gaming nowadays? I don't see it as worth it. all that money to play games that look like everything is smeared with mud and gray paint. Oh yeah, that's REALISTIC! Because realistic is NO COLOUR!!!!

The irony really is how beautiful last-gen games by comparison look on the HD-TV, since they use all the colors.

^ You forgot Dark Green and like the sun is going supernova.

My story for Shadow of the Colossus was that the Wanderer was killing the colossi to restore colour to the world and stop the sun from exploding.

I CAN HAS COLOR NAOW?

That foolishness aside I do find it odd that the more "realistic" games (As much as a game can be realistic anyway.) tend to have a lack luster color pallet. Hell say what you will about the simplicity of the 8 and 16 bit games but they were far more intresting partly because they made use of vibrent color.

This merger also makes me wonder if Sony will now make PS3s with exploding laptop batteries in them.

I can kind of see why they would make some games all brown and gray and depressing. I mean. The use of brown and yellow fit games like Guild Wars: NIghtfall and Far Cry 2 like a glove since Africa actually IS kind of like that in many parts. But even then, Guild Wars: Nightfall still did actually give you some colour when you were in Istan or vabbi.

Having another DVD based system would now be considered backward. Their problem was that they unleashed a Blu-Ray based system too early.

Well, the biggest difference between including blu-ray in the PS3 and dvd in the PS2 is that the PS2 didn't require the spending of hundreds or thousands of dollars on a suitable viewing screen - everyone already had one, basically. HD is still on the rise. Sure, it's started to pick up momentum because of the tv providers and HD movies, but it's still nowhere near the level of distribution the standard television is. Hence the reason why Nintendo didn't want to include HD media - it would honestly only create storage issues and drive up the cost of manufacturing on all parts - it would even require more RAM just to process the higher resolution textures, and you'd be looking at a system rivaling the mid-to-high-range 360's in price.

This is a stereotype perpetuated ever since Doom was new and popular. It began as a legitimate complaint because of the limitations of the 8-bit pallete - the palette literally was a majority of grey and brown hues with a few sparse colors. Since they only had 256 colors to work with, they went with the more subdued tones. It was such a big issue in that engine because it was basically one of the first games to tackle lighting in a 3D environment.

It reminds me of the argument that the first screens of Diablo III have too much color in them, mostly because the new 3D engine renders out colored lighting different than the traditional 2D engines of the prior games.

But I actually liked the Diablo III screens partly because they weren't afraid to use a little colour to add some variety.

The Diablo III "rainbow scheme" is a deliberate design decision, AI, not a technical artifact.

Since the original developers aren't there any more, it's been made with the main Blizzard studio's more cartoon aesthetic.

Yeah, I'd heard they wanted to give it a painted aesthetic. The style wasn't the major complaint, though, it was actually that the game was "too colorful" or more importantly that most of the screens were in full on daylight.

The rainbow in the trailer itself was a publicity stunt - everyone was talking about the game after that.

I'm aware that Blizzard North is no more, which is really a shame. What they did was far superior to WoW IMO.

The realtime lighting comment was actually straight from the art director for the project himself, and I honestly agree with what he said. Most of the stuff people were asking for creates contrast issues where objects in play are not immediately distinguishable from the background, because sprite-based engines used before can display the objects in an as-drawn state while the 3D engine would cause lights, etc, to play out in a way unconduscive to gameplay.
