Exclamation Sony eliminates Games Division, merges SCE with Vaio and Walkman sectors

Bloomberg.com: Technology
http://www.sony.net/SonyInfo/News/Pr...8E/09-028E.pdf

Sony is eliminating the gaming division. That doesn't necessarily mean they've called it quits with games, just that the gaming division has been replaced, probably for financial reasons. This is pretty new, so we might not be getting all the facts for a while now.

So, what do you all think? Is Sony going to call it quits in gaming? No PS4?

Since the PS2 is the only especially sellable product in their lineup, it's really questionable if they can keep the whole company afloat.

They just gotta stick in there. Get those prices down, get more/better games, maybe consider merging their gaming division with Nintendo or something, and definitely rethink their marketing.

With Kaz Hirai as the lead, it'll all sink to the tune of '599 US DOLLARS.'

At least I got a Blu-Ray player for that $300 I spent...

I'm willing to bet that this also has a little to do with Microsoft buying all the exclusive rights to most of the popular games in Japan, killing system sales of PS3s.

I remember reading somewhere that the person who came up with Final Fantasy was angry at Sony. Also, that since Namco-Bandai wasn't going to pull a Symphonia and come up with another version on the sony system anytime soon, Tales of Vesperia made the 360 actually sell out in Japan.

Not sure, but I've heard comparisons of what Sony's done now with what Sega did right before it's fall from paradise.

Hmm, I myself am not sure what to expect here. Only time can tell.

PS3 is basically the equivalent of the Saturn. They've stuck it out, but now watch them propose the Dreamcast 2: a sad thing which will rock but then be forgotten thanks to the hole dug by PS3.

Well, I doubt that'll happen, but they're on their way to critical existence failure, with the dominance of their key franchises/exclusives in the dump.

Didn't Sony just announce that their gaming division was finally profitable after two years of eating losses? What the hell would possess them to cut it when it's finally starting to pay off?

This post actually got me thinking. It seems like an unfriendly reminder of what Bill Gates did to IBM way back in the day. I don't think it's fair to call Microsoft a good system if the only reason they are getting up there is because they keep buying out all of the good companies. Sony lost the FF series, Nintendo lost Rare, etc.

Saw it coming.

Don't care so much, since SEGA and Nintendo are on the upswing and the other stuff I can play on my Xbox.

I think if they ditched the Blu-Ray player and made it quite a bit cheaper as a result I might actually think about it. Not a huge majority of people have tvs that can utilize it, so it's silly to put in as a forced bonus. I think that's what's killing them, little kids aren't saving up their cash to get one like they are for the 360 or the Wii.
