Sony files patent for PS3 laughter detection > Video Game News, Inc. > Video Game News

According to Siliconera, SCEA is experimenting with laughter as a controller.

"The application picks up metadata, which includes laughter recorded by the microphone and a user’s expression from the camera," says Siliconera.

Both the camera and the microphone are linked to the PS3 which identifies the user and his emotions, and transfers the data over the network.

One example Sony gave for detecting emotion was "two individuals give each other a ‘High Five.'"

They would identify boredom if a user is “looking away from the presentation, yawning, or talking over the presentation.”

Who knows if anything will ever come from this, but if nothing else it's interesting.

...And I thought the Wii horsey idea was odd.

Also, what the hell kind of game is that guy playing?

Sony just wanna have fun!

Making games which yell PAY ATTENTION for looking away due to the ADD of the next generation being so bad they can't even watch for 5 seconds without looking away.

You know, this is possibly a mechanism that can make games recognize when they suck. I don't see how it can help them immediately not suck, though.

Forget the guy laughing...why the hell is that dude turning a wheel which causes his ass to get kicked several times?

This seems too much like that idea Microsoft has as well. These are just ideas for now....and if this doesn't work then their 10 million dollar patent will be useless.

Note they are patenting a microphone next to a web camera. VERY INGENIUS.

But will the game always be funny? Gee...if I play it over a few times I might not laugh as much. Will this screw me over as far as replayability goes?

WHAT IF I DONT FIND IT FUNNY OR SAD AT ALL!!!???? WHAT IF I HAVE A BLANK EXPRESSION!!!?????

I'm wondering how this will play into most games.

I mean... I can't really think of a real useful application for any game other than ones designed specifically for it, and even then there can only be so many uses.
