Sony Patents New Single-Handed Controller Concept

Sony Patents New Single-Handed Controller Concept

Quote:

A new patent filed by Sony has popped up that shows what looks like a stick-like controller for the PlayStation 3 with four face buttons on top, and can be held and operated with one hand (via Siliconera).
The patent was filed in the U.S. by Sony Computer Entertainment, and the device is described (evidently using the vaguest terms possible) as a "hand held game controller." You know, as opposed to all those game controllers that are held in the mouth.

This raises an obvious question: What on Earth could this controller be for? The fact that it's held in one hand suggests it might possibly be the future "nunchuck" to Sony's upcoming "wand" motion controller, but then the fact that there only appears to be four face buttons on this thing makes that possibility unlikely. As Siliconera notes, another possibility is that this is a new quiz controller, possibly for an upcoming new entry in Sony's Buzz! series.

Then again, this is assuming Sony ever even releases this thing, as patents are often filed for concepts that may never make it to market. Any other guesses?

(...Besides guessing that this is a new custom controller for a third entry in the Dead or Alive Xtreme series. There. We made the joke so that no one else will have to.)

I can think of two things the players will be doing with their other hand. The one that's more socially acceptable is the one that scares me most.

Sony Motion Controller Finally Named?

Quote:
What could possibly be more annoying to the games press than a promising looking piece of technology with a silly name? How about a similarly nifty little gadget that goes for over half a year without any sort of official title whatsoever? Yeah, that's pretty irritating.

Fortunately for everyone involved, the Sony motion controller's days of anonymity may soon be numbered. According to IGN, Electronic Arts CEO John Riccitiello gave a speech on innovation at the UBS 37th Annual Global Media Conference in New York City this morning, where the industry executive talked up Sony and Microsoft's upcoming motion controllers.

"In the coming year, both Sony and Microsoft have announced new controllers. Motion sensor controls, Natal and Gem, these are likely to bring new consumers into the marketplace," claimed the CEO, possibly outing the final name for Sony's glowing wand controller.

While neither Sony nor EA have officially commented on Riccitiello's potential leak, Gem sure seems as likely a name as any at this point. The thing is supposedly gearing up for a spring 2010 release, and regardless of your feelings about the name Gem, launching with a placeholder title like "Sony Motion Controller" would be outrageous. Truly, truly, truly outrageous.
You read that last sentence, guys? The Jem joke has already been made. Don't try it.
