PlayStation 3 Facebook Integration May Also Be On The Way

PlayStation 3 Facebook Integration May Also Be On The Way

Quote:

The PlayStation 3 recently picked up Netflix support -- could it be getting Facebook integration as well? If these image is anything to go by, it'll indeed be happening sooner than later.

ScrawlFX is reporting that an "anonymous tipster" sent the picture above and others along. They depict Facebook support, a revamped gamer card, and a new way to organize photos.

Obviously, this "anonymous tipster" could be an ordinary person who knows how to use Photoshop, so treat these pictures as pure rumor for now. However, it's certainly not far-fetched to assume that Sony will follow Microsoft's lead and integrate social networking tools into their platform.

Regardless of whether or not these images are legit, don't be surprised if Facebook integration does indeed appear sometime next year.

This looks shopped. I can tell by the pixels and seeing quite alot of shops in my time.

But if it is real, it was inevitable.

Ew.

Wait, Facebook is not worse than Myspace.

Nevermind.

Exactly. Facebook has much less security issues than Myspace did. I remember seeing 90 percent of my friends posting stupid bullitens like "OMG I JUST WON A 500 DOLLAR MACY'S CARD COMPLETING THIS SURVEY" and I knew very well it wasn't real. I have yet to see that happen on Facebook.

After using the Facebook app on the 360, I actually found a use for it.

Its great for looking at picture albums with a group on a larger screen. A few of us were going through a mutual friend's wedding/honeymoon album, and that was kind of cool since the 30" TV is easier to view with a group than the 19" monitor.

Outside of that, I didn't find any use for it. It would be nice to see it automatically update with achievements/trophies/"I'm playing ___" status updates, but that hasn't been announced.

Facebook Support Confirmed for PlayStation 3

Quote:
Following yesterday's leaked shots of Facebook integration on the PlayStation 3, the company has confirmed the rumors through a few different venues. An inside source told Eurogamer that the shots were legitimate, and Scrawl noted the shots came directly from the U.K. PlayStation site. As if that weren't enough, CVG reports that Sony commented they'll "have more info on this very shortly." None of the confirmations included a time window, however, so we're not yet sure when Sony would be prepared to release such an update.

Whatever Sony's plans are, it looks like they're aiming for parity with the upcoming Xbox 360 Facebook support. Social networking with a control pad may not be the most convenient way to go; but for those who want to check on their friends from the comfort of their couch, it looks like there will be at least two new options soon.

Sony Previews PS3 3.10 Update

Quote:

In less than a week, we've gone from a few leaked images to confirmation to a full-blown tour of the PS3's next update. This one will be incorporating Facebook as well as revamping the photo gallery, among other things.

"This update also enables developers to set specific criteria in their titles to publish additional game information to your News Feed. You can then check out your updates, and those of your friends, on Facebook, Twitter, and other social media favorites through the PS3's built-in web browser," wrote network operations director Eric Lempel.

"This is just the beginning of our integration with Facebook and we are looking forward to adding new features enhancing the experience in future updates."

Another highlight is that Sony is apparently once again modifying the PSN Friends List "based on feedback" they received after update 3.00. Sony has been criticized for adding a grey background to each entry while making them larger, but doing little else.

No release date for the update yet, but based on the pace of the information so far, it seems likely that PS3 owners can expect it before the end of the year.
