So even at the lower price point of $299, Sony is losing only $37 per console (rounded out to about $40 after factoring in marketing, box costs, and other expenses). "In light of these factors, the PlayStation 3 probably is already at or near the tipping point for profitability," iSuppli's Andrew Rassweiler concluded. The biggest reduction in costs for Sony comes from switching from 65nm conductors to more power-efficient 45nm conductors. And the most expensive component in the PS3? That remains the Blu-ray drive, which costs $66 each. Good thing they won that format war, huh? | Well, that's certainly better than it was before. |
