Dragon Quest VIII

Bought it brand new for ten bucks. Haven't opened it yet but it should be good.

So, anyone played it? Thoughts?

That's the "Journey of the Crused King" is it not?

I loved it. Fairly good storyline. A great item making system. Interesting Level up system. Each hero can use one of three specialist weapons (for instance, the main hero. Can use either a Sword, Spear or Boomerang.)

Just keep in mind this is a lot like old dragon quest games in which you pretty much have to grind because the bosses have sudden difficulty spikes. Despite that it doesn't have a dozen recruitable characters and different classes, you have the same four static party members (with some exceptions), you can still modify them and they actually are a little elastic in which roles they got. Jessica is obviously the mage, but can actually inflict quite a bit of hurt with stuff like Twin Dragon Lash. (Whips are always good) Hero is also obviously a fighter, but one can actually teach him healing spells so he can heal if Angelo runs out of MP or you just wanna conserve his MP and have Angelo attack a few times. Plus, hero can also attack multi-targets which can help in some battles where trash mobs keep spawning.

The Cheating AI also works both ways in this game - The enemies cheat in that they seem to know when you inflicted a status ailment or will heal all the damage you just did by the end of the round; but if you set the allies on AI, they often gain AI Clairvoyance. I've once set Angelo on AI just to be curious and found that for some reason he knew to use midheal on Jessica before she got attacked; enabling her to survive the attack. (Since she is still rather squishy)

It sounds bad...Small party, AI problems, excessive grinding...

Oh well, the only real issue to me will probably be the small party. FF usually delivers a large and diverse cast, something I'll probably be missing in this game. However, if the characters are strong enough I won't mind.

Oh, and the box for this game is really cool.

It's not exactly bad; it's just trying to be an old game and at the same time offer some things that people have pretty much made the RPG genre into in between the first couple Dragon Quest games and this. The party members are obviously customizable, but not to the point where they pretty much all become overpowered-as-crap and are virtually identical sans character models and overlimits - You know what games I'm talking about.

The bosses are also challenging. It's rightfully so in some cases that some of those really difficult bosses are leagues above the trash mobs. Trash mobs are also a little harder than some Final Fantasy trash mobs but not by much...some enemies are more annoying than others.

I personally liked it - I've always been a big fan of the Dragon Quest series and the DQ8 totally follows in the footsteps of the early games.
That being said, I'll have to agree with what has been said here. The leveling up is tedious and you'll probably spend endless hours just to beef up your party.
But everything else is amazing and the game is literally HUGE ! The soundtrack is also gorgeous.

What little I played was good. Though I wish I could kill the voice actors and those which allowed them to work on this game.

I've been playing it and I like it alot but it seems like all I do is train I spent like 3 hours training yesterday and got up like two or three levels, and then my crappy ps2 turned off in my face.
