It's Official: PS3 The Heaviest Console Ever

It's Official: PS3 The Heaviest Console Ever

Quote:
Former Sony Computer Entertainment head Ken Kutaragi (above) would undoubtedly be pleased as punch to know that the PlayStation 3 has officially been declared by Weekly Famitsu magazine to be the heaviest piece of game hardware ever released in the history of mankind.

The first PS3 model, launched in November 2006, tips the scales at just over 11 pounds, or five kilograms. That puts it way above the original Xbox, which was ridiculed before its 2001 launch for its enormous size despite weighing "only" 8.6 pounds.

Sony may have the last laugh, however -- the new PS3 Slim weighs a scant 7.05 pounds, making it just a notch lighter than the Xbox 360 and its 7.9 pounds of girth.

(In case you're curious, the lightest game console ever released was Nintendo's Game Boy Micro (2005), which weighs in at only 80 grams/2.82 ounces.)
I would've thought the two huge-ass Xboxes would've been heavier, but I guess looks are deceiving.

I might care if I ever moved my PS3 anywhere, or if I were some kind of spindly gammy-handed ricket-ridden slack-twist who couldn't lift an eleven-pound object with ease.

I'm curious, is there a list of game consoles by weight somewhere?

Depends on your definition, honestly. Older "console" systems doubled as home-computers, including the famicom. Technically, the home PC should double as a gaming console, for which the sky's the limit.
