PS4 production in late 2011 ahead of 2012 launch tip suppliers

PS4 production in late 2011 ahead of 2012 launch tip suppliers - SlashGear

Quote:
Sony may have confirmed that the PS4 next-gen console is in development, but the company isn’t so foolish as to announce any launch details for fear of cannibalizing PS3 sales. That hasn’t stopped the tattle-tales in Taiwan, of course, which inform DigiTimes that Sony is readying production though Foxconn and Pegatron at the end of 2011.

That’s ahead of a commercial launch of the PS4 sometime in 2012, the component supply chain sources suggest. Sony supposedly expects to ship at least 20m PS4 units in 2012, though the exact release date during that year is unknown. Foxconn and Pegatron are both responsible for assembly of the current PS3.

Specifications of the PS4 are a mystery, though motion-based control in a similar fashion to what Microsoft enabled with the Kinect sensor bar for the Xbox 360 is said to be a given. Comments from Sony in the past have suggested that the console will still rely on optical media rather than shifting to all-digital; Sony looks to have been burned by the PSP Go! fiasco, which ditched physical media but lacked momentum in the digital download space.

Otherwise it’s likely to be the usual recipe of faster, more graphically powerful and more internet and smart home aware. Sony has already leveraged its PlayStation Network – recent hacking and downtime notwithstanding – but we’d expect to see interaction between the company’s upcoming S1 and S2 tablets as well.
bad move sony

Sadly, I won't be buying one straight away. Not till I know about back compatibility at least.

It probably is. Look at the PS2. It hung around while the PS3 was still out, and even surpassed its sales at certain points. As far as I know, it is still for sale some places, but IDK for sure anymore.

Btw, PS4 FTW.

This may sound slightly elitest, but unless the PS4 has a physical controller it's gonna be a tough sell for me.

That is until the next Ratchet and Clank Game comes out . :3

They would never completely exclude a physical controller from existing.

They come out with fancier things way too quickly. I haven't even had the PS3 that long. And really, what could be different? Same remote, with Internet browsing, media streaming, and games. With even better graphics? And they will probably be sequels to the big FPS games out now. What could be different enough to warrant buying it, especially when the PS3 is still young? How many more features could they add?

its because the wii-u is coming out. sony and microsoft definitely do not want to make a new console already. sony is basically freaking out and rushing it

i really can't think of many ways to improve the ps3 with current technology anyway. its either going to be the ps3 v2 or cost like a million dollars

Games and controllers are different. If they completely excluded physical controllers, I'd be surprised, since no mainstream system I am aware of has done that. I know I don't wanna go dancin' 'round to play games. If I want that, it should be optional not mandatory.

Btw, from what I heard, the PSP Go was a failure and I sure hope Sony learned something from it.

Yeah man, I agree, they're definitely not the same. I just wanted to point out what a bad decision that was, and we shouldn't be surprised if they goof up a lot of stuff. Sony doesn't have the muscle to push new technology forward like they used to, because the demand is in no way similar to what they were selling with DVD, and even Blu-Ray is still struggling. They should've thrown all their weight behind HD-DVD instead of trying to outcompete, now they're floundering and why? Look how damn expensive Blu-Ray is. HD-DVD was literally about as cheap to manufacture as DVD. Tons of people could've upgraded. Ah well.

If Sony is releasing a PS4 any time soon, I'm sure it will improve on the PS3, but I'll be damned if it's anywhere near backwards compatible. If they continue to try to push the Cell processor on devs, they'll be wasting even more energy, but they can't afford to just slap one into a PS4 as a secondary processor. They've put themselves in a catch 22 for backwards compatibility.

And if they don't seriously reconsider their stupid "high end" price point that they started targeting with the PS3, they're not going to be able to recoup launch costs with software.

Outwardly, they're saying "Welcome to the party" to the Nintendo, even though they were a year late to Microsoft's party, but internally they're going to be ****ting themselves that Nintendo waits until technology superior to their current generation is affordable and just trundles on in with a new system that they are manufacturing for a profit.

What Sony and Microsoft both have done - sell for a loss with the intent of gaining an edge and driving the competition out - is counter-competitive and was under past US law illegal. They drive consumer expectations up at a cost to themselves, and either run their competitors out of the business or even worse - create an environment of acceptance for this kind of behavior by competing in the no-profit zone.

I miss the days when Video Game consoles where produced by actual Video Game companies. SNK did the same thing the PS3 did, but they faced ramifications for that mistake like they should have, Sony was able to just going pretending it still Won even though it didn't.

^^ Isn't Nintendo selling the 3DS at a loss now? Wouldn't doubt it if 360 started doing the same before year'send for Kinect.
