Sony patents biometric controller, announces SSB-like game

Sony patents biometric controllers • Eurogamer.net

Quote:
Sony has filed a patent for biometric game controllers.

As spotted by Siliconera, the listings describe sensors built into the DualShock 3 and Move controllers, as well as a proposed handheld, which measure skin moisture, heart rate and muscle movement.

Included in the filing are a number of possible implementations for the system.

* Weapon handling could change depending on how nervous the player is. For example, when using a sniper rifle, the more relaxed your heart rate, the steadier your aim.
* Players could tense their grip to withstand an attack or charge a shield.
* An in-game character could start sweating if the player's heart rate increases.
* Your in-game health bar could deplete more rapidly if you're nervous.
* A player's attacks could differ depending on heart rate.
* Background music and scenery could change depending on your stress level.
* A game's difficulty could adapt to a player's stress level.

It all sounds rather similar to what Nintendo was shooting for with the MIA Wii Vitality Sensor add-on shown off at E3 a few years back.

Sony has given no indication as to when, or if, it actually intends to implement the tech.
Sony to Announce Competitor to Super Smash Bros. Like Game — playtribune.com

Quote:
Nintendo fans, this news means one of three things for you: 1. You will royally hate Sony. 2. You will be more inclined to get a Playstation 3. Or 3. You don’t care.

Recently Sony hinted an equivalent to Super Smash Bros. like game is in the works, which is considered to be one of the best series for Nintendo systems. “Sony Smash Bros.” will feature characters such as Nathan Drake, Kratos, and Sly Cooper. Characters such as Cole from Infamous, and Crash Bandicoot are also likely. Don’t think the above picture is real, however; it is only a fan image.

Here is a quote:

“The gameplay style will cater to people who like the Smash Bros. series and that also goes for the stages as well.” Paul states the the stages will be “vibrant and varied” and will take inspiration from popular playstation games such as Jak and Daxter. Much like Smash Bros., “there will also be random objects spawning into the levels throughout the match.”

I personally think that if it does have the same style of gameplay, it will be awesome, and I can see Microsoft doing the same thing at some point as well. However, I can see Nintendo fans getting extremely angry. One problem with this is that it makes Super Smash Bros. practically non-exclusive to Nintendo, which will probably cost Nintendo a good bit of money.

This isn’t the first time that Sony has done something similar to this. Sony has successfully pulled off clones of Nintendo games such as Mario Kart and Mario (ModNation Racers and LittleBigPlanet). If the trend continues, it would mean that “Sony Smash Bros.” is going to be a game worth getting on the Playstation 3 or Vita (If it comes out for the Vita).
These will go well with their totally-original Move controllers.

They'll get Sakurai working on the game which will cause Nintendo, in a fit of jealous rage, to delay SSB4 indefinitely.

Also is the only source seriously just some guy's blog? Who is this Paul guy? Do I exist?

hm. Interesting.

That's really all I have to say, I guess. Doesn't have much of an impact on me. I have a feeling that Sony might want to go way to serious with the SSB-type game. That could 1. Make it fail, 2. Create a faction of fans who now claim that SSB is too "kiddy," or 3. Both.
