I mean, you guys are number three in the country in basketball and you can't fill up a stadium, even when it's the break in the football season? Come on, Buckeye fans are better than that. I know it and you know it. I guess this is further proof that OSU is a football team that has a school. Sorry. -CSM |

The basketball team gets great support, even in an arena that was seemingly made for watching hockey. In fact, all the Big Ten games for the rest of the year have been sold out for a couple of weeks already. Nice try, though. Did you not notice that the floor design had no scarlet and grey or block O's on it? |

Still, even if it was in Indy, it should have been filled. Isn't Cincy a secondary rival of OSU (does OSU have a secondary rival, or do they save all their hatred for Michigan)? -CSM |

Gender: Posts: 10,061 Thanks: 37 Thanked 62 Times in 46 Posts | **EDIT: It was the John Wooden Tradition, not the John Wooden Classic, which is different. LOL. Honestly how could you have watched and not once noticed that the floor said "Conseco Field House" and not "Buckeyes" anywhere on it, or picked up one of Kellogg's or the other announcer's many references to the fact that the game was in Indianapolis. Should have been sold out? It was a 3:30 game EST the weekend before Christmas in Indianapolis, about a three hour drive from C-bus. 18,350 in attendance isn't bad. Rivals? They hadn't played each other in 44 years. So no. The only thing about it that says rivalry is that Thad Matta used to be the head coach at Xavier, U of Crime's crosstown rival. We hate Notre Dame, too. But mostly Michigan. |

A rivalry with ND that doesn't have much history (only Brady Quinn undeservingly stealing the spotlight from the much-more-deserving Troy Smith). Michigan has a much more serious history with ND (in fact, ND can be blamed on Michigan to an extent). But mostly it's OSU the Wolverines hate. -CSM |

True story. Yeah, tournies/specials in december like the Wooden tend to draw pretty small crowds. FYI for future reference: If it is indeed being played on a team's home court, there will be a massive symbol at center court with logos plastered all over the damn place. I'm not sure, but I think Ohio has a massive O. College hoops in December is generally low attendance across the board, regardless of program strengths. All the students are home, and people are traveling to see family, not to see the natti get squashed by tOSU. If you really want to rip on tOSU, watch the history channel for a solid week and come back with the amount of experts they have on from tOSU. I think I've seen ONE lifetime. And no, not just counting the hours upon hours of modern marvels they show...I'm talking about everything from ancient egypt to religious stuff to WWII to modern day...I've never seen a buckeye prof on there but I've seen countless UM guys there. And besides, Michigan State owns both your asses in hoops. Izzo for life. |

Ask any scarlet-blooded Buckeye who they hate besides Michigan, the most common answer will be Notre Dame (other than "whoever is playing Michigan"). Even though they don't play often (though they should), their fans still hate each other's guts. Who doesn't hate Notre Dame fans, though? You know what other UM grads you can see on the History Channel? The Unabomber and Jack Kevorkian. Michigan State-Ohio State will be fun when it's close...at tip-off. Honestly, I'm scared of how unstoppable Ohio State will be once Oden is playing two fully healthy wrists. Last edited by ShyGuy727; 12-19-2006 at 06:33 AM. | |

Granted, the Bruins are number 1 for a reason. More shocking is tOSU getting annihilated by Florida. That game was proof as to why Oden will stay at least one more year. I had questions about tOSU, and that just sealed it. They get the "Overrated team of the week" label. They got destroyed by Florida, who in their own right are a top tier squad, but tOSU didn't even make it close. Oden got shut down the entire game and Florida managed to completely own the paint and boards. Oden will be amazing and awesome: in two years. Today showed what happens when you play a team with experienced big guys that can dominate the paint. When you're bitch-smacking a 7'0" guy and get him to commit boneheaded fouls, you essentially proved why Oden still needs some time before he becomes the beast he's advertised as. But again, this is tOSU we're talking about...the only sport that matters is football, which I think they'll win hands down. |

Gender: Posts: 10,061 Thanks: 37 Thanked 62 Times in 46 Posts | Just got home from being out of town, wanted to jot down some thoughts and feelings. Ohio State played like what they are...freshmen. When Florida (or any top tier team) shoots like that from mid-range and beyond the arc no one is going to beat them- they couldn't miss. "Ohio State played like freshmen and Florida played like National Champs". Thanks for that insight Billy Packer. Oden is playing with only 85% in his right hand, and he's still not fully in shape. I think Matta left him in way too long in the second half, he usually is NEVER the last guy down the court and could barely jump in the closing minutes. Absolutely drained. One of the biggest turning points in the game IMO was Oden's third foul with 3.5 seconds left in the first half. Oden was staying even before this debacle happened. He apparently loves college, is a smart guy and his mom wants him to stay in school as long as possible. Usually I'm on the same page as Matta but I found myself yelling at the TV to call a timeout several times. Donovan had it down, anytime tOSU went on a little run he called a timeout. And it worked. Still some very coachable moments...I hope Matta opens up next practice with, "Today I think we're going to run a little bit. And after that we're going to run some more". Some very coachable moments. The team played lousy, but Thad coached just as bad. Ohio State lives and dies by the three, especially when your two big men, Oden and Hunter go 2-9 from the field. Harris had no touch on his three's (1-6). Conley and Cook were the only glimmers of hope on offense, except Cook played such abysmal defense (or lackthereof) that Matta couldn't stand to keep him in. He's far from my favorite player, but I have no idea why Terwilliger sat the whole game until about 5 minutes left in the game. Hunter and G sure weren't doing much, why not put Matt Sylvester II in for a change. And I hate ripping on refs, but we couldn't get a blocking foul to save our asses in the paint. Inconsistency, I can't stand it. Not taking anything away from UF...they kicked our asses. Billy Packer and Noah should just marry and get it over with. And the overrated chant was a little unnecessary. Whatever, we'll only get better. And revenge in 15 days. Last edited by ShyGuy727; 12-24-2006 at 01:37 AM. |

Coming from a neutral observer (me), the calls weren't really unbalanced. They were calling a loose game overall. I don't think the overrated chant was unnecessary. Florida returned every player from the championship squad and they're rated lower than a young team that they ran out of the gym. That's college basketball. If you only lost by like 12, yeah, it's a bit much. Yet, you guys got SMOKED by 26 points. Again, you didn't look as lost as UM did against UCLA, but I think this game proved that there's no way you can rank tOSU that high. Correct me if I'm wrong, but this is the first time tOSU has seen a team where the big guys are simply going to play through Oden, right? Should make you nervous of what's going to happen when you play some of those conference teams with giants on them. I would have been screaming at the coach if I were an tOSU fan. WTF was with leaving Oden with 2 fouls on him in the first so he could lay that chokehold on the Florida guy. I mean, come on, that's something you learn when you're 10: when the starter gets 2, take him out before he gets a bonehead foul late in the first. |
