The schools are only 8 miles apart and have seven national titles between the two. UNC right now leads the overall series by a long shot, 127-96, and has 4 titles compared to Duke's 3. I still don't understand why commentators consider Dook to be the most legendary program of all time (I think that honor either goes to Kentucky or UCLA). There was a longstanding coaching rivalry between UNC's Dean Smith and Duke's Coach Kicantpronouncehisnamebutheslameashellsoitdoesntma tterevski. And, of course, Dean Smith won that series. In fact, Coach K has an overall losing record against UNC (although to be fair, it's almost 500). There were a lot of controversies in this rivalry, such as last year when Hansborough's face was elbowed. Both schools have produced legends including Michael Jordan from UNC (who I hate) and Grant Hill from Duke (who I also hate). -CSM |

The dominance of both schools in the ACC, the closeness of the two campuses (8 miles apart - students go to the same bars and restaurants) along Tobacco Road, the public vs. private funding dichotomy... Sure, Maryland probably has the same general hatred for Duke that UNC does (who doesn't?), but it's not nearly as personal. |

MD and Duke definitely is more important in this current decade though. To be fair though, almost every school in the ACC hates Duke, as does every school in every other conference. In fact, Big Ten basketball fans (such an overrated conference if you take out Indiana) think of Duke as representing the entire ACC. -CSM |

I figured the phrase "far more historic" would have tipped it off. Heh.-jay |
