Mitchell Report

Due out officially this afternoon.

Let me preface the discussion by saying that I think this was a bullcrap investigation. I have to question the slant on this thing when they use someone from inside baseball to conduct it. While former Senator Mitchell had a good political career, he's an executive from the Red Sox and intends to return to the Red Sox. I haven't read it (because it isn't out), but I'm not going to be shocked if the ownership (headed by "found guilty of collusion" Bud Selig) were to use this to gain massive leverage over the MLBPA. Not that it's a bad thing. They need to get an independent agency to drug test.

That being said:

Roger Clemens *
Andy Pettitte *

ESPN - Source says information on Clemens will be in Mitchell's report - MLB

Not bad. I was worried Bagwell would show up on there.

Actually, looking at the list, it doesn't look like anybody that is likely to be anyone's "hero" is on it.

Probably because they're using a very limited amount of sources and they're limiting it to very few clubhouses.

Heh, I'm glad the O's traded Tejada yesterday when they had the chance.

Sorry to see Brian Roberts' name on there though (although not too shocking, since his name has been linked to steriods in the past), since overall Roberts good person both on and off the field.-jay

Thumbs down

I'm really sorry that Ankiel is on there, since he was formally exonerated by the league.

Quote:
On September 6, 2007, the New York Daily News reported that Ankiel had purchased 12 months' worth of human growth hormone from a Florida pharmacy from January through December 2004. The drugs, which were delivered to Ankiel in eight shipments from Signature Pharmacy in Orlando, Florida, were obtained through a prescription issued by Florida physician William Gogan, who was working at the Palm Beach Gardens-based clinic The Health and Rejuvenation Center, 8 miles from Ankiel's Jupiter, Florida home. The shipments came to light as a result of an investigation by Albany County, New York District Attorney David Soares.

Ankiel eventually admitted to using HGH, but said he was following doctor's orders. HGH was not banned by Major League Baseball until 2005. The prescription itself could have had medical benefit to stimulate synthesis of collagen, which would have aided recovery from his Tommy John elbow surgery.

Major League Baseball concluded that there was insufficient evidence of any wrongdoing by Ankiel. He was exonerated on December 6, 2007, and the investigation was closed.

David Justice claims innocence (he doesn't "do needles"), and that he's never even met one of the people linked to him in the report:

Here is a list of Mets associated with the scandal:

Lenny Dykstra 197
David Segui 198
Josias Manzanillo 209
Todd Hundley 211
Mark Carreon 211
Matt Franco 213
Mo Vaughn 234
Chris Donnels 238
Todd Pratt 243
Mike Stanton 253
Paul Lo Duca 256
Fernando Vina 261
Mike Bell 267
Gary Bennett Jr. 270
Scot Schoeneweis 302

I don't like Schoenweiss anyway, and Lo Duca is gone. The rest of them either aren't with the Mets anymore or aren't very visible. -CSM

That's the thing to keep in mind about this report...we only "know" (assuming the report is right about most of these players) about a small percentage of the overall users in baseball. That's the scary part.

I breathed a sigh of relief that Ripken wasn't on the report. I may've had to kill myself.

I appreciate that someone is finally going to stand up for the baseball players that DON'T use steroids and get good by good ol' fashioned practice and hard work. I haven't really read much into the Mitchell Report, but it just saddens me that you can't associate the word "baseball" without thinking "steroids."
