I don't know how long it'll last, but I'll do it until I run out of ideas. Of course, the first rivalry is the one everyone's been biting each others' feet over. ![]() vs. ![]() This rivalry would probably just be like any end-of-the-season rivalry if it weren't for the vast mystique surrounding it. Almost every tradition of each school is impacted or impacts the other in some way. Things such as "Script Ohio," which is the trademark of Ohio State's marching band. As many people know, the formation (albeit done differently) was first done by the Michigan Marching Band, and the OSU band acknowledges this. Conversely, the MMB's Drum Major's mace always reads "Go Bucks Beat Blue!" because their mace manufacturer used to play in the OSUMB (called "TBDBITL" by OSU fans and "TBDBDLTSAGOTMAC" and "TBDBITCOREHSMB" by Michigan fans). OSU's fight song, Carmen Ohio (one of three, actually), was written after a loss to Michigan. The programs are very storied, and they've been playing 104 times. The rivalry's apex was realized in the 1970s, which provided a huge spark for its notoriety. Ohio State's legendary head coach Woody Hayes dominated Michigan for 20 years, but his protege, who he expected to take his place at OSU, Bo Schembechler, accepted a job at Michigan in 1969. This "Ten Year War" highlighted some of the greatest games ever played in the rivalry, including a 10-10 tie in 1973. Other memorable games were played in 1950 (the "Snow Bowl," which was the year before OSU hired Woody), 1968 (one of Woody's NC teams beat Michigan so badly that he went for two on his last TD because "they wouldn't let me go for three!"), 1969 (Bo's first year when OSU came into Ann Arbor and Michigan beat them; this started the 10 year war), the 1997 game, which cemented Charles Woodson's Heisman Trophy winning season and Michigan's most recent NC, the 2002 game in OSU's NC season, and the 2006 game, where the teams were ranked 1 (OSU) and 2 (Michigan) for the first time. There are many cultural references to the rivalry, especially on ESPN. HBO did a documentary on the rivalry, mostly focusing on the Bo-Woody years. -CSM |

And just for the record, a reporter for the Los Angeles Times at the 1955 Rose Bowl gave The Best Damn Band in the Land, not Ohio State fans. We just took the nickname and ran with it (like any program would). The official name of the band is The Pride of the Buckeyes. Also worth mentioning is Tressel calling his shot (15 secs in): | ||

Tress insists to this day that he wasn't guaranteeing a victory, he was just saying that Ohio State fans would be proud of how their team played against Michigan. While that may be a lie for PR purposes or whatever, Woody afterwards would be more like "I told you those sonsofbitches were goin' down, didn't I?" or something to that effect. I've yet to hear JT bad mouth an opponent, win or lose. He's more like "P.C. Woody" Another element to the rivalry is the recruiting aspect. Ohio produces its own talent and generally stays in Ohio to recruit (except for the big 4 and 5 star guys that every program goes after). Michigan gets a good size chunk of their classes from out of state, and battles frequently with Ohio for recruits. Desmond Howard and Charles Woodson are both from Ohio, as are Mario Manningham and Shawn Crable, just to name a few. Last edited by ShyGuy727; 12-06-2007 at 10:44 PM. Reason: Automerged Doublepost |

So you better like that part of him if you're a Browns fan. Most Michigan fans, even those of us who hate the Browns, still have a lot of respect for Braylon Edwards. In fact, the fact that he selflessly decided to become a part of a rebuilding franchise (which is actually surprisingly rebuilding) in Ohio, of all places, makes us respect him even more as a person. -CSM |
