| Member | Man-genius fired (finally!) ESPN - Eric Mangini out as head coach of New York Jets FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- Eric Mangini is out as head coach of the New York Jets a day after the team lost for the fourth time in five games and failed to make the playoffs. The clincher was the Jets' 24-17 loss to Miami on Sunday that gave the Dolphins the AFC East title. "We don't take this decision lightly," Jets owner Woody Johnson said at a Monday morning news conference. "We respect Eric for what he's done but we want to build on the successful foundation he has laid." Mangini, 37, was 23-26 in three seasons with the Jets, including 0-1 in the playoffs. "For the current New York Jets organization, we've made the decision to move on," Johnson said. "It's a judgment call. "I don't think it was one thing," he continued. "We had to go in a different direction. There's nothing specific. It's just a call we made. Hopefully, it's correct." Johnson said the final decision was made Sunday night but that the process had been going on a long time. "We met with the coach this morning," Johnson said. "We thanked him for all the good things he had done for us, we thanked him for his dedication and his loyalty. But he understood." Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum praised Mangini, saying he did not think he had lost the team. "Again, Eric has left a really good foundation here, and we're looking forward to building on that foundation," Tannenbaum said. The Jets acquired Brett Favre before the season started and ran off to an 8-3 start. But losses to Denver, at San Francisco, at Seattle and to Miami over the final four weeks left New York outside of the playoffs for the second straight season. Tannenbaum said Monday the organization wants the 39-year-old Favre to return for 2009 and fulfill the final year of his contract. Some of Favre's Jets teammates agree. "I would love to see him back next year," receiver Jerricho Cotchery said after Sunday's game. "You don't learn the ins and outs of this offense in a couple of months so I would love to see him come back and get the chance to learn the [offense] ... and get an offseason of [preparation] in so we can turn some things around." |

No one gave him any credit while he was at BC and no one's giving him credit now. I don't care if he just lost to Arizona. I care that he brought a team wrecked by scandal back into the playoffs. -CSM |

All we were missing was consistent play from the QB position, had Redman started that whole season, we would not have been 4-12, plain and simple. Joey Harrington's play made us look worse than we did. Emotional year? Yes. But we had as much of a chance to pull our 6-7 wins with Redman at QB. Matt Ryan did a solid job this year, as long as he has Turner, and White, and we keep giving Norwood carries, we'll be fine. |
