I don't think anyone else has posted this, so here's another site for backgrounds.
http://bgexchange.boundforearth.com/

Enjoy.

EDIT:

Oh, I also have a great site for a free image converter.

http://www.irfanview.com/

Turns to gifs with only 0.3% distortion, free, what more can you want?

http://www.geocities.com/one_human/advanced.html
has files for your computer that upgrade paint to give it Jpeg and Gif capacity (although it is pretty redundant once you have irfanview)

Oh yes,
Crashman's 10 commandments of sprite comix.

A couple things on that comic.

What's so bad about humor comics? Yes, they can be annoying if done incorrectly. But if it's well done humor with a plot attached to it, like Spaceballs or Airplane!, then it works. If it's just a bunch of people making stupid comments, nobody's going to want to read it.

Some of those "No-nos" can be done, but should only be attempted if you're good and can figure out how to make them work. For example, while staying away from text going over the characters should be avoided, there are times when doing that works/makes it funny. For example, somebody doing a Metal Gear Solid dialogue knockoff. Filling the screen (as long as it's not a word bubble) with text about PETA rambling gives the feeling of droning on pointlessly. Still, only use it for one of these occasions, and use it rarely.

Paint Shop Pro V.7 only costs about $30 on eBay. At least that's what I got it for.

You might want to add something about Modesty vs. Self Bashing for Pity Praise.

Where are these lemmings going? The Super Nintendo Super Shire! Hop in line and follow them there!

I didn't write it, FS did. At the end is a disclaimer that any of the rules can be broken for effect; the guy even does it himself.

nothing's bad about them. It's just that because there are so many humour comics out there, then people will make comics like what you described and resort to killing Ran Cossack like Kenny or carbon-copying jokes from other webcomics because so many people seem to think that all comics have to be funny. Plus, Psyguy said "serious sprite comic=no", so almost everyone's going to avoid serious sprite comics. (And if he's against serious sprite comics, then why the hell is That Sprite Comic on there? That Sprite Comic's been gaining popularity for no reason whatsoever! Plus, those sprites show absolutley NO originality WHATSOEVER! Come on, they're freaking MEGAMAN PALLETTE SWAPS!!)

And those are more or less what not to do if you're a newbie. Because, like what Introbulus said:

Of course, there's always the "if you're good" exception, where you're sometimes allowed to stretch rules a bit to make the comix funny (although that hardly applies to the technical rules like "always use GIF" and "No Nudity", but a few of the rules, if you're good, can be used as a joke to play off of other sprite comics. However, you should only do this if you have plenty of experience in making sprite comics and want to try something new.

Sorry for the DP, but here's another example of what NOT to do in a sprite comic:

http://www.geocities.com/mr_woffums666/Main.html

Basically, whatever Mr. Woffums did for his comic, you don't do for yours.

I found a good way to get motion blurs via Pixia! Wootness! I'll post some examples and tell how to do so, later, because it's a little buggy.

Gerkinmans guide to making Text Baloons

First Get the comic
Then Type the text onto the Comic
Then Click the Rounded square tool and make it filled
Pull it over the text in the colour you want
Type the text in over the baloon
Use the polygon tool to create the pointed
There you have it

Here's the graphic version:

Well, done, Gerkinman. After putting that text bubble in there so elegently I began to feel sorry for the poor Mario.

And I have to ask you guys to PLEASE remove the link to www.ripway.com up there and replace it with www.photobucket.com or www.imageshack.us or any halfway-decent image hoster.

Ripway only gives you 5 megs of bandwith per day, and with all the N00bs making .bmps and using lots of extra space we'll never get around to seeing their comics. Heck, even well made .gif files will run out of juice easy if you only have 5 megs and you post these in the forum.

Please. Call me LvK. Anyways, unless you've posted a non-locked comic topic here before, you can post the thread.

Oh, and here is a site that can help with photoshop users:

http://psychodrone.com/screwthesecomics/NesGuide.html

It's Nes's survival guide to comics. Also, check on the bottom-It has some other helpful links near the bottom too.
