Cadoluna. Criticism much appreciated.

I'm making an RPG for a Game Maker Competition. It's about the moon falling to the ground, with a monster inside that wants to destroy the world. Of course, I'm not good at spriting humans, so I'd like critique of my human base:

Especially about the right-facing poses...

Oh, and the middle pose in each direction isn't part of the walking animation.

Oh, and the walking-sprites for Up and Down are mirrored as part of the animation. Same for all of the Right.

I think I'll have to see sprites of other things that you feel look better so I can make a more informed decision. If you want, though, here's my initial thought:

The head looks rather conical, it's height appears to change for no reason, and it lacks facial features other than eyes. It's just a base, so it's fine that it has no hair.

Oh, wait, the shorter ones are children, right? In that case, you should change more than just their leg length.

Things that look better? Chrono Trigger looks better. Do you mean things I've already made that look better? N/A. Alternative sprites for particular poses? I haven't made any.

As for the head, its height, or at least its length, doesn't change. And facial features would be too hard to add at such a small size.

Meanwhile, the children also have shorter torsos and arms.

(I'm sorry, I just deflected all of that.)

Most of my concern is how it looks while walking. Any suggestions? (Currently, I'm just moving the arms and legs.)

Looking at the children, yes, it does look like they are smaller. I should really learn to look at the sprites before I decide what they look like Still, his head is the same size as the adult head, and I think that should be changed.

I just looked at some walking animations via MS Paint, and it looks okay to me, although I noticed in most cases that he stayed the same height, but that's not really a major issue.

The profile sprites need chins, IMO. You also ought to see if you can find any profile shots of people walking - you might need more swing in the shoulder. Basically, your upper back turns slightly to accomodate the movement of your arms - Arm goes forward, so does shoulder.

Also, I'm wondering why you're not using all that empty space. You could easily do better proportioning at those dimensions, especially with the arms and legs. I'd suggest keeping the child sprite about the same height, and giving the adults more length of leg.

As for the face, if you don't want to do more facial features, I'd suggest moving the eyes down slightly to give it an angled-down look. Eyes actually fall about center, vertical-wise on a standard human face, anyway. It's a common misconception that they don't, usually because of hair-cover. Still, if you keep the eyes that far up, you've got plenty of space for some more features.

@AI: Thanks a bunch! I'm off to work on these.

@DZ: I KNOW GAWSH. I didn't know about that until I had already designed the storyline.

I started the tiles recently.

The mud ones alternate... the grass ones occur in 3 x 3 blocks. Next time, I should include a block for proper viewing...

Now, people. Edit: All right, this is less sloppy. Most of the changes are in height and the waliking animation. And the lack of profiles. So, the ones on the left are a few edits back, just in case I want to make a running pose out of them. Oh, and it looks like I didn't finish the arms for the back-facing children.

Oh, look. It updated automatically.

See the ones in blue. Which arm position do you prefer?

^I think I slightly prefer the one on the right.

I was referring to this:

The party has to be on the moon while it falls. In fact, they battle the dark wizard who made it fall, on it, while it falls. It's gonna be the best scene in the game. Meanwhile, I have the tile for the ground on the moon.

PS. The size of the image (414 x 256) is the size of the screen. Whaddaya think?

The first thing I think of is that you could've made much better use of the space you had. If you wanted to show off the size of the screen, you could've made an example pic, like this:

Anyway, all the tiles look fine to me.
