It's a final project for Highschool of sorts. And guess what. Your all going to help me out!

My project topic I chose is basically a "How to create a good RPG" sort of thing. I state my topic, go over the 4 types: Standard(FF), Action(KH), Stradegy(FFT) and MMORPG(FFXI). I then explain that RPGs are story driven and that when developed they need to focus on 3 general areas.

Story, Technical(battle system and the other systems), and other (Graphics, music, replayability, and all that.)

I then go into each of the 4 types and give examples of a major success, an alright game where i'll go over its strong points and where it fell short. Then you'll have the **** games. Games that are forms of torture in a foreign country I don't know the name of.

While the first 3 will be covered by you folks. The 4th, MMORPGs I have left to my guild to assist me with.

Now for the topics purpose. Your going to help me with choosing my examples. I'll need a sizeable amount. You offer imput of problems and strong points. And I utilize your opinions in building my 30 minute speech/10 page paper. Fun huh?

Here's what I have so far:

Standard:
Final Fantasy 6 threw X
Suikoden
Xenogears
Grandia
FFX-2(The first of the **** titles.)

Action:
Kingdom Hearts
Dot Hack
KoToR

Stradegy:
Disgaea
FFT
FFTA
Tactics Ogre

Gimme more titles, i'll look into them. And were all happy. Me more because I get closer to being home free while you have the privledge of helping someone pass high school and go to college while laughing at the 5 dunces who decided to open their own business as the project the day before their project choices are due and will inevitably fail because...as said before...they are dunces.

Pray you don't go to A18's school. She did something like that and her teacher failed her for it.

Standard:
Phantasy Star IV
Magi Nation
Chrono Trigger
Wild ARMS 3
Septerra Core (It's a console style RPG on the PC-A rarity)

Action:
Crystalis (Add some old school ones)
Brave Fencer Mushashi
Threads of Fate

Strategy:
Fire Emblem (Can't do a thing about strategy games and not include Fire Emblem)
Shining Force II

If that's too much, I understand, but include at least one old-school RPG like Crystalis or Zelda.

Actually, here's one weird thing that might not matter: Camera control in some Action RPGs like Kingdom Hearts and dot hack sometimes gets a bit on the annoying side.

Don't forget to include Dungeon Stalkers like Shining Soul and Dark Cloud.

Thumbs up

Add a "What the hell is going on?" category so you can throw in EarthBound.

Action:
Secret of Mana (Seiken Densetsu 2)
Seiken Densetsu 3

I'm not really sure what category you would put those in though. ^^0

For standard titles you should bring in games from the Dragon Quest series. Tales of Phantasia and Star Ocean are both great games. Earthbound would fit this category, it's basically spoofing standard RPGs.

For Strategy, Ogre Battle. It's different than the games that have "Tactics" in their title.

I'm not sure why KoToR is in the Action section, but hey, it's your project. You could possibly put Zelda in this category, as some people refer to it as an action RPG series. I myself have always thought of it as an adventure series with RPG elements. Does Morrowind fit in here?

You might want to mention that RPGs in their earliest form were text-based adventures.

People are really touchy about plot-twists and stereotypes in RPGs. If there are no plot-twists, it's totally predictable. If there are too many plot-twists, you'll no clue what's going on. Stereotypes in RPGs came in with the precedents set by the first six Final Fantasy games.

If a kid at my school can pass from doing a project on Tupac I can make a project on Video Games and pass.

My current set-up

Standard:
-FF series to kick it off.
-Suikoden
-Dragon Quest games. (Undecided which. I haven't played them)
-FFX-2 (So I can rant for a couple minutes.)
-Xenogears(Good/bad beause of storyline. Fun for some. Nightmare for others.)
-Breath of Fire
-Chrono Trigger/Cross (I'm gonna side with Jay when I get into this sequal explanation.)
I'd like to add in at least 1 more **** game and a game that is strong in some areas yet lacking in others. As in its fun but it could use help in others.

Action:
Kingdom Hearts
Dot Hack
Brave Fencer Musashi
Secet of Mana------>Legend of Mana
Diablo

Stradegy:
FFT
FFTA
Fire Emblem
Tactics Ogre
Disgaea

MMORPG:
Everquest
Shadowbane
Anarchy Online

The drawback is that I need to actually get a good idea of what was good and bad with the games I haven't played. I can't go out and rent them to see...for various reasons. So i'll look into asking a few of you about games such as Musashi and such.

Zelda is an RPG. It's an action/adventure RPG. Let's just leave it at that so we don't get into that "Zelda's not an RPG because it doesn't have Cute Female Archers" or "It has no magic" again. (I saw that old topic.)

That also brings me to think something else you can add is that some people argue whether action games like Zelda, Kingdom Hearts, and Crystalis are RPGs.

Oh, and where's Phantasy Star IV?

I'll class it as an RPG for this one and bring up the debate. I'm going for 30 minutes here folks so I gotta grab at the most debated **** to add into my presentation. The more I say the more they know I know what the hell i'm talking about while they don't know what the hell i'm talking about.
