Thumbs up

Yeah...I know we have two other Black Mages threads out there...but I just had to rant since I just got my own copy in the mail today...

And wow...Holy Crap...this is amazing...

Umatsu really knows how to kick some musical ass.

I have only been able to listen to it for a little bit, but so far, I'm completely impressed.

One of the best re-workings of video game songs I have ever heard.

Of course, it doesn't hurt that it's Umatsu's band.

But wow, they did a wonderful job.

Plus, the best thing is that they kept such a great theme for the album...all of the Battle Themes. I mean, seriously, the Battle Themes were always some of the best songs in Final Fantasy games. So having a CD with JUST the Battle Themes was a great choice. They even have The Battle with Seymour on here, which I thought was one of the few good tracks on the FFX soundtrack.

So yeah. Great choices. Great music. Great playing by Umatsu's band.

Now Mitsuda has to do something like this...heh.

Although, in the Umatsu vs Mitsuda wars, I think I still have to give the edge to Mitsuda. I mean, for some reason Mitsuda's songs are aways just so much more alive and interesting. His work on the Chrono Trigger, Chrono Cross, and Xenogears soundtracks were beautiful. Umatsu has some good work, but none of it has ever really been able to compare to the stuff that Mitsuda does.

So yeah...to sum up, everyone should go out and steal a copy of Black Mages today. Now. Seriously. It rules.

Oh, and I hear they are working on a new album due out this year. Sweet.-jay

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't Uematsu contribute a certain number of tracks to Chrono Trigger?

I think he might have done a couple of the songs, yeah. I think Mitsuda is credited as the main composer, though. But I think Umatsu composed some of the songs, like the Sealed Door song.-jay

Uematsu composed (about) three songs for CT, including the main boss battle theme. Check with somebody else for the other two (or so). I forgot.

Yuka Tsujiyoko(the main musician that composes the songs in Fire Emblem) can kick Uematsu and Mitsuda's musical ass anyday with the tunes in Fire Emblem Seisen no Keifu.
