They're turtles, just some of them have wings.
Bowser is also a turtle.

And remember, "I'm-a Luigi, number one!"

look familiar to you? That is most definitely what bowser is...if bowser we're a water imp he'd be puny looking and green...he aint a water imp...he's one big turtle!

Cool

The little guys in shells who walk back in forth are called Koopa Troopas. Sometimes they have wings, and are called Koopa Paratroopas. They are certainly not ducks. Koopas are turtles, hence the shells. And Bowser is a Koopa, not a kappa. There are no kappa in Super Mario Brothers. (There's a mountain in SMW called Kappa Mountain, but ASIDE FROM THAT...)

BTW, Happy Birthday, SMBHQ!

The koopa troopers are turtles, sometimes with wings.

Bowser is most definitely not a kappa. In fact, the thing he seems most akin to is the Chinese sea dragon, Lung Wang, and he's not even really one of those either, since he's got, you know, hair and fingers and spikes.

That Kappa picture does look similar to bowser. It also looks familiar to a boss in Super Metroid and the bird creature. I can't remember the names though. Nice find ace on the Kamac thing between our two cultures.

kappas aren't generally perceived as big and strong and angry however...their usually puny and green troublemakers. If you wanted to picture an imp...think of when your characters would be turned into imps on final fantasy 6 (3).

i believe that nintendo more based golduck from pokemon to be like the kappa than they did with bowser...that is to say if they even tried to base bowser off a kappa which i can't understand how or why. The only similarities between a kappa and bowser are that they have big green shells....except bowser's is spiky. Your picture of an angry kappa is sometimes rare as they are not normally big, strong, and scary in mythology. (WOW I LIKE HOW OFF TOPIC WE ARE COMPARING KOOPAS TO DUCKS OR TURTLES TO BOWSER AND KAPPAS) also, going back to pokemon, golduck's japanese name is indeed "Kappa"....bet not many of you guys knew that...lol

Oh yeah... that thing. Where they tried to explain why punching bricks somestimes gave you items, because you're 'freeing' a citizen and they give you stuff in return.

Goofy is not the same thing as kiddy. You and the world at large would do well to learn that.

whatever...all i'm trying to say is that bowser is not based off the kappa. If nintendo based anything at all on the kappa it would have to be golduck who's japanese name is "Kappa".

note that bowser dont have webbed feet or green skin or a rounded shell....note that the kappa does! And note that golduck seems very similar to a kappa...note that the kappa looks nothing like bowser.

Bowser also notably lacks a puddle-bowl on his head and a beak, and has a tail, which kappa do not. Golduck does have a tail, but it also has a flat spot on top of its head. Also note that kappa are usually a bit smaller than a human, where Bowser is much bigger.

Wario, when I see the angry Kappa one pictured early, I see more of bowser then goldduck but I can see more of golduck in the cute reading one. That is also neat that golduck literally mean kappa. I guess people see different things when the see those picture so thats probably why we have allot of different opinions. Also something does not necessarily have to look very similar to be based of something. Anyway, great finds all.
