Special (Japan, Hudson Soft) Hi, Does anyone know about the Japan-only "Special" version of the first "Super Mario Bros." game released by Hudson Soft (under license from Nintendo)? I find it interesting, because there are coin rooms in the water underworld stages. ~Ben (SMBLover81) |

It was released for the Famicom Disk System. The game, which was released only in Japan, was a special promotional version that was given away by the Japanese radio station 'All Night Nippon' in raffles in 1986. The game borrows levels from Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 2 (Japanese version), and Vs. Super Mario Bros. The enemies and the mushroom retainers at the end of Bowser's forts are replaced with Japanese music idols, famous recording artists, and DJs, as well as other people related to 'All Night Nippon.' It was published by Fuji TV, the same company that published Doki Doki Panic (which was later remade into Super Mario USA, a.k.a. Super Mario Bros. 2). However it's going to be a little hard to find some more information on this game. |

If they had IMO we'd be talking about a different marioverse 1 First major change: An item which initially would just grant a no points lost continue would eventually be downgraded to a one up. Expect there to be a few more items in the mario RPGs which are healing/health centered based on the bee/the honey. 2 Ice Stages become even more annoying with the icecicle around and whatever cruel and unusual modification of it that Nintendo makes. 3 The mario enemy bestiary is expanded substantially(look at all the variations we see of koopas/goombas. Now picture THAT being done for the fighter flies and side steppers) 4 Mario's item repotoire is expanded earlier with the hammer being a weapon useable not just in battle. We see the Paper Mario usage of hammers in SMRPG. 5 Rolling barrels implies more industrial/urban states. Perhaps we'd have a mario brothers game precedent to the city stages that sonic the hedgehog is so fond of?(The parts of Wario land II and III which take place in cities are IMO a good hint as to what it would look like) |

Very rare for underwater stages... Enemies from Donkey Kong (1981) and the original Mario Bros. (1983) also appear during the game. I even noticed World 8-2 begins underwater. |
