Well, geez come on he's had that look since God knows how long, and we see a lot of other Nintendo characters getting a makeover. Take for example Link. Look at him, he's gotten dozens of new looks

This is what the Japanese reads: Mario is a kid here, he always will stay at that height for the rest of his life. He plans to go to college and not to plumbing school. Later Mario goes to high school, but he impregnates Peach, so he has to drop out and go to plumbing school

. Peach has the baby, but the baby dies at child birth. He is now a short, fat, mustachioed plumber who turned out to be a dork and always tries to save the princess from a horny turtle.
