Chapter 2: The Return of Prince Mallow

Below the clouds that covered the bright blue sky over Mario’s world, there was a pleasant green meadow. Grass grew in lush, green rows that ran along the earthen floor that so many denizens of the peaceful land walked. Yet, something was not right with the seemingly normal meadow. It was the past site of Monstro Town. The rehabilitant town for monsters had served as a cliffside retreat for the monsters who had chosen to restart their rather shaky lives. Now it was gone. It disappeared in a cruel twist of fate. Perhaps, a certain hero had pondered, whoever was behind it knew of the whereabouts of Peach.

“This is Sergeant Flutter calling all units behind me. Has anyone spotted a citizen, over.”

One of Sergeant Flutter’s troops called back, “Negatory, Sir.”

He grimly hung his head lower than usual. He had failed.

“Wait, Sir. I spot a figure in the distance.”

Flutter raised his head to spot the figure. After confirming its location, the troops followed him down fast and hard.

A small, white figure merrily made his way along the dust-beaten path. That figure was Mallow. He had always been branded as a crybaby, but that was before. Before the Smithy gang invaded. During that most challenging of journeys, Mallow found his true parents. Now he was a prince. He chuckled to himself as he thought, “That still doesn’t mean I can’t go through Land’s End for some adventurous hiking though does it?” Little did he know how adventurous the day would become. He could barely make out the small dark blots in the sky approaching him quickly. Just in case, he brought out his trusty ribbit stick.

“Uh, Sir,” said one of the sergeant’s troops. “That looks like Prince Mallow!”

“Uh, so it is,” he said as he remembered his first orders. “Let’s bring him to home base.” With that, the flight troops flew down to intercept the young Nimbian.

After closer inspection, Mallow put his ribbit stick away, realizing it was just the Flutter Troops. He decided to make it easier for them. “Mellow! Where are you?” Suddenly, a small cloud zoomed down out of the skies to land right beside the young prince. He jumped on and said, “To the Flutter Troops. Now!”

Sergeant Flutter nearly ordered a retreat, but he finally recognized the white fluff as Mallow and his rider cloud, Mellow. He saluted as the young prince approached them. “Sir Mallow…Uh Prince Mallow, your needed at Mushroom Kingdom immediately.” The sergeant proceeded to brief Mallow on all the important happenings.

“Don’t worry. I can make it on Mellow here. You all probably need to check this area some more.”

“Jolly idea, Prince Mallow. Ten-hut!” After a quick lineup, his troops followed him down for further investigation.

While Luigi talked with Toad, Mario was studying over the young mushroom who had volunteered for such a dangerous job. She was standing in the doorway that the chancellor had once dubbed drafty. His hypothesis seemed to be correct as she was shivering. “Is our young adventurer cold?”

“Oh, no Sir. Just excited.” She gave him a big smile.

“Very good then. It’s always good to see at least one member of a team to be excited.”

Marina looked up at him and said, “Who’s this Mallow fellow.”

Mario looked up to the sky and spotted a large fluffy cloud. “He’s a prince of a far off kingdom that’s located in the clouds. Nimbus Land is the most enchanting of all cities. Maybe….we’ll get to see it.”

Marina grimaced, “What if it disappears too.”

Mario hadn’t thought of that. “Well…we just can’t let that happen. With you helping us, I know we can succeed.”

She looked comforted, but Mario wasn’t sure he felt the same.

Enigma bent over the cowering figure in front of him. It was one of his many armed guards. “Are you sure everybody that lived in Monstro Town was present last night?”

The guard knew that this wasn’t going to end well. “*Gulp* Uh..not exactly. I will search though..Hehe.”

Enigma simply gave him an evil grin. “No you want.” With a snap of his fingers, he was dragged off to the pit of Bordanga, located in a remote region of the ship. “You,” Enigma said as he pointed towards the shadows. “You will find them, Yondovich.”

Out of the shadows came Yardovich’s brother. He had also wanted revenge, but not as much as Enigma did.

“Anyone that lived in Monstro Town and escaped the test is to be killed.”

Yondovich nodded and left, taking a few guards with him. The race was on.

Everyone was overjoyed when Mallow returned. Mario and Luigi shook his hands and joked about his prince hood. After all was said and done, though, Mallow spent most of his time with Marina. It was to be expected , though, because of the closeness of their ages. They laughed and talked about similar experiences until Mario gathered everybody around the guest room table to lay out their plans.

“Our mission right now is to find someone that was not in Monstro Town that would normally be there. Two reasons: One, they might have seen or heard something relative to the disappearance. Two, they might be mixed up in all of this.”

After Mario spoke, Luigi took a turn, “Unfortunately we don’t have a clue about where they may be.”

Marina spoke up, “We should probably check in each town.”

Mallow spoke, “I concur.”

Mario nodded, “We’ll split up into two teams: Mallow and Marina, and Luigi and me. We’ll look in Nimbus Land, Seaside Town, and Merrrymore. You all take Rose Town, Moleville, and Tadpole Pond.”

After a short farewell, the group took two different roads.

Mario spoke to Luigi on the way, “I feel as if my popularity has just dropped to zero.”

Luigi laughed with Mario, “She does seem to enjoy Mallow’s company. Besides, who would want to hang out with a big, fat plumber like you.”

Mario looked irritated. He said under his breath, “Peach. That’s who.”

Luigi laughed, “I heard that. I kind of thought she had a thing for me.”

Mario poked back, “Maybe in your dreams.” After all, a little silly arguing always helped ease the tension before a dangerous journey. Mario was wondering if they would all make it back this time.

Mallow was ecstatic about getting to take Marina to Tadpole Pond. “You’ll love my grandpa. Actually, Frogfucious isn’t really my grandfather, but he’s so close I just call him that.”

Marina smiled back, “Well, if he acted as your grandfather, he is. I can already see that he brought you up well.”

Mallow flushed red, “Gee, thanks. Awhile back, people would have called me a crybaby.”

She looked stern, “I can’t imagine why Prince Mallow..”

“You can call me Mallow.”

She nodded and continued, “Mario said you were very brave during the Smithy invasion.”

He smiled, “Let me show you something.” He started to sniffle and then cried aloud. Suddenly the air was filled with tears like rain.

She looked awed, “Wow!”

He stopped. “I have a unique ability to control the weather.”

She turned to him. “Hey, can you make it snow. It rarely ever does in Mushroom Kingdom.”

He responded with millions of snowflakes floating to the ground. He smiled as she made snow angels out of snowflakes and caught a few on her tongue. He was inclined to join her, but there was a mission to be completed. He raised his arms, stopping the snow. “Come on, Marina. We’ve got to work.”

A small settlement in Bean Valley was on fire. A small settlement had met Yondovich. The chaos was started when the villagers would not admit to seeing anybody coming from Monstro Town. Yondovich knew they were probably telling the truth, but he had decided he needed some fun while searching. He looked up as a small mushroom was brought before him. “So…you are still being recalcitrant. This is your last chance. Where did they go!?”

The short mushroom cried with fear, “Please, Sir. We know not of which you talk about. Let us be.”

Yondovich kicked him swiftly to the ground. “Take him and whoever else survived the fire and bring them to the ship. They shall not be permitted to communicate with anyone down here.”

The various guards saw the evils being committed, but they also saw the tiny fires lit in each of Yondovich’s eyes that stood for unlucky guards. They also wondered if one of those fires was meant for them. In truth, though, one of the fires was meant for Mario, the murderer of his brother.

Mallow and Marina found only bad news when they reached Tadpole Pond. The tadpole, who was now a frog, that enjoyed music, told them that Frogfucious had been at Monstro Town when it disappeared. They also said that a strange thwomp from Monstro Town had passed through saying that he had some information about the incident for a price. Unfortunately, the tadpoles didn’t have enough money to bribe him. When asked where he went, they said…Rose Town.

Mallow was followed by Marina as they ran past Tadpole Pond. He stopped. “Hey, we can use Mellow. Come here, Mellow.” The loyal cloud came to him.

She was amazed at the living cloud.

“Hop on.”

“Uh,” he started to say as she grabbed on to his arms to keep from falling off.

“Yes,” she said smiling, with a hint of fear in her eyes.

“Never mind.”

The young friends raced toward Rose Town to intercept the mysterious Thwomp.

In Chapter 3 Mario and Luigi run into Koopa as they try to make their way to Nimbus Land via Bowser Castle. Mallow and Marina, the young warrior mushroom, discover double birdo trouble on the way to Rose Town. Yondovich continues his mission of terror as many terrified villages fall to his evil cause, and of course there is still the mysterious Enigma. What’s his plan? What does he mean by revenge?
