| Guest | Okay, lets try to get this organized here. It's pretty simple up to mario waorld, then the order gets confusing. YI-DK-DKjr-MB-SMB-SMB2-SMB3-SMW but what after that?Super mario land?SMRPG?And what about the "party games" like mario kart, mario golf, and mario party?CAN they fit?I personally see them as alternate universes. |

Anyway,I think only the adventure games should count. The part games just throw a bunch of random mario characters into a random situation for no apparent reason, and while they may be fun, they have no reguards to the actual storyline. With that said,we still have the SMRPG/SM:TLL/SML1&2 problem,as it is fuzzy as to what order they go in.Personally,I think that SMRPG happens right after SMW,as Yoshi is in the game, and he doesn't reappear again until SM64(in which case,he remarks that he hasn't seen Mario for a long time). We can then figure that mario shortly goes to Sarasaland to stop the alien invasion, and upon his return he finds that his land has been stolen(which we can assume was given to him for freeing the mushroom people in SMB & SMB3).Now,the lost levels may have occured after ward, seeing that the stretch of time Mario was away during SML1&2 would have been plenty enough for bowser to retake the mushroom kingdom with a more powerful army.Of course,if we go by this timeline,we have to wonder why Luigi didn't stop bowser earlier(of course,we know he doesn't like fighting without his bro...) Or we can put it where the japanese have it-right after SMB.I don't know how exactly it was supposed to happen, but somehow bowser was supposed to return and retake over the mushroom kingdom directly after #1. Of course,TLL was not released until far later in good ol US of A,after SMW happened.so it is more likely that TLL happened sometime after SMW.

Some evidence is that the instruction booklet of Wario Land 4 dates it as happening on November 17, 2001: the same day that Wario Land 4 was released in the USA. |

As for the inevitable question that'll come up about whether the release date for America or Japan is proper, all I can say is that I got them on the American dates, so those are the ones I go by.

| Guest | ^Okay,I agree with you about "the lost levels". But unless Mario doesn't go to his home for extended periods of time,it makes more sense for SML2 to happen pretty closely after SML. Quote-" mario(with the except of SMRPG) has basically no story)" So? |

And SMW does take place between SML and SML2. So Mario probably stopped in at his home with Luigi after the ordeal at Sarasaland, got invited to a vacation, and went right out. |

It seems designed that way... I put SM64 after Paper Mario, cuz it was in Paper Mario learned the Butt Stomp with that badge. I imagine the Party adventures (also Kart and Tennis) represent the sort of small adventures that fill up the characters' time between their grand adventures... They get all competitive about stuff. Lost Levels would come shortly after Super Mario Bros. It's just further plots by Bowser to kidnap the Princess (several times, in fact... you save her numerous times in that game). After that, Bowser wised up and started thinking of ways to sneak her away (at the end of SMB3). [ January 05, 2003, 03:07 PM: Message edited by: Shigeru Miyamoto ] |

Like YI, as far as continuity that game's a joke. Your want for 'chronological order' is futile, it makes as much sense as to try putting every single Looney Toons cartoon into a timeline. That being said, I'll throw you a bone on the MarioKart, Golf, Tennis, Party etc. games. For Super Smash Bros. Miyamoto explained that if there needs to be a 'story' for the game, some explanation as to why Mario, Link, Samus, Fox, Pikachu etc. all existed in the same place (plus worse yet, were all fighting each other!) it was that they were all magic dolls brought to life. Yep. That way fans would not complain that you could make Zelda fight Link, and 'worry' if it affected the Zelda games (yeah, that one kept me up at night... sheesh). You could easily say the same thing of the multiple MarioKart and sports games. My sister and I always joked when playing Super Mario Kart (back when it first came out) why the guys invited Bowser to the race. Seemed darn stupid to allow the monster constantly attacking the kingdom and abducting the Princess to be allowed in a friendly go-kart race! |
