Chris Morris, a columnist for CNN Money, has written up an article outlining Nintendo's possible plans for the near future. With the recent GC price cut to $99, and the resulting sales surge, many believe that this is Nintendo's time to get back in the game.

However, there might not be another Mario game in the Cube's future. After a relatively disappointing Super Mario Sunshine, people expecting a true follow up (or that "Mario 128") might not get it. George Harrison told Morris in his article that a new Mario game for the system might be possible, but it's not a sure thing at all.

With its large catalog of franchise characters, Nintendo could see a big surge of interest from late buyers. After all, the people buying consoles over the next few years typically stick with what's familiar. But players looking to play a Mario game other than "Super Mario Sunshine" may be in for a shock.

George Harrison, senior vice president of marketing for Nintendo of America, told me Tuesday that while a new Mario game for the GameCube is still a possibility, it's definitely not certain. Nintendo game master Shigeru Miyamoto teased a crowd with footage of what he called "Mario 128" when the GameCube was unveiled in 2000, but has said little else since. Harrison said the title is still under development, but he stopped short of saying it would be a GameCube game.
You can also read the whole articles (I've provided the links).

Well, what do you think? Do you think that they would actually do something like this?

That's not true. I know it isn't. Did they even get Mr. Nintendo's word?

Nintendo can't afford to ditch their most important franchiase on the Cube knowing the next generation of consoles are not going to be ready for a few more years.

This refers to a "regular" Mario game, such as Mario 128 and not spin-offs like the Mario Party series.

There is no and was never a "Mr. Nintendo." Ninten means leave luck to the heavens in Japanese, and do is a commen suffix for companies in Japan. The current President of Nintendo (NCL) is Saturo Iwata. However, it is really run by a board.

George Harrision is the head marketing guy, and they usually work 1-1.5 years in advance of a release. (Not 100% sure) So he would be a good source.

As for consoles not coming out shortly, it will probably happen late 2005 or early 2006, about 2 years from now. Nintendo needs to be working on games up to two years before a release, so resources will be pointed towards that. No "regular" Mario game on the Cube from now on probably means a "regular" Mario game for the N5.
