Top Ten List #7: Freakiest Transformations

Week #7 (Week of 02-08-09)
Top Ten Freakiest Transformations

#10: Dry Bowser (New Super Mario Bros.)

There's something strangely disturbing about knocking a person into the lava, and then watching their smoldering skeleton come back up at you. After defeating Bowser for the first time in New Super Mario Bros., he makes a second appearance as a reanimated skeleton halfway through the last world. Heck, he even pulls off his bones and throws them at you. Doesn't get any more messed-up than that.

#9: Zombie Wario (Wario Land 2)

Getting hurt by zombies, ghosts, and other undead foes in Wario Land 2, 3, and 4 would morph Wario into the grotesque Zombie Wario. On the upside, Wario becomes immune to enemy damage and can defeat most enemies by touch, and he can drop through certain obstacles. However, as a zombie he moves very slowly and can barely jump, if at all. In order to revert to life Wario has to walk into light or fall into a body of water.

#8: Shadow Peach (Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door)

After making her dreaded retun to the world after a thousand-year slumber, the Shadow Queen violently possesses Princess Peach, who had been brought by the Shadow Sirens as her new vessel. "Shadow Peach" then goes onto crush Mario and his friends, until the wishes of Mario's friends break the Shadow Queen's spell long enough for Peach to weaken the demon. Eventually, the Shadow Queen is exorcised and Peach is saved.

#7: Smithy's True Form (Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars)

Upon being defeated once (and destroying his factory in rage), Smithy morphs into his final, true form in a great flash of light. Instead of looking like an evil Santa, he now looks like some sort of giant skull. Not only that, but his new head is able to transform into different forms, providing diverse and often deadly methods of attack for Mario and company. Nothing's more annoying than a thousand volleys of Arrow Rain.

#6: Bowletta (Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga)

As if Bowser wasn't scary enough... but Bowser with breasts? At a certain point in the game, the evil witch Cackletta fuses with Bowser's body, turning into the doubly-powerful (and doubly-creepy) Bowletta. By the end of the game, Cackletta is defeated, and we get our old, loveable, presumably-male Bowser back again.

#5: Giant Baby Bowser (Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island)

Even as a toddler, Bowser was scary. After Yoshi and Baby Mario defeat Bowser in his throne room, he's given the regular boss treatment with Kamek's magic dust, turning him into a complete colossus. Giant Baby Bowser would then begin closing in on Yoshi from the distance, threatening to take down the entire castle with him. Yoshi could only defeat him now by gathering a Giant Yoshi Egg and precisely launching it at Giant Baby Bowser. It's also worth mentioning that this boss fight had some of the most badass music in the game.

#4: Super Dimentio (Super Paper Mario)

After Count Bleck's defeat at Mario's hands, the sinister Dimentio appeared and revealed his own plans. Using the seed he had planted in Luigi's head, he fused with his body and became the giant, mechanized Super Dimentio. The new monster features a variety of dangerous attacks, and a buttload of HP. Super Dimentio is the final fight in the main game, and defeating him releases the Chaos Heart and brings peace to the universe... or does it?

#3: King Boo and Bowser (Luigi's Mansion)

It was odd to see Bowser appear as the end boss of Luigi's Mansion. It was even odder once you realized he was a robot. Bowser probably makes his scariest normal appearance in this game, including the fact that his head cold levitate off his body and breathe fire at you. Come on, King Boo, let up.

#2: Giga Bowser (Super Smash Bros. Melee)

Man, Bowser's managed to rack up half of the spots on this countdown. He must be a pretty freaky guy. Anywho, Bowser made an appearance as the final boss of Adventure Mode in Super Smash Bros. Melee. However, defeating him under certain conditions would cause him to mutate into Giga Bowser. Bigger spikes, longer hair, dragonlike body... and a ton of attacks that could knock you right off of the stage. Giga Bowser is definitely Bowser's coolest transformation. It even became a Final Smash for Bowser in Brawl.

#1: Mimi's True Form (Super Paper Mario)

The cute girl you know who laughs a lot always has something pure evil hidden, and Mimi is no different. Upon cornering her (in the ladies restroom, no different), Mimi begins her transformation into her "true" form. First, she lifts her head, then begins a series of Exorcist-like headspins (disturbing neck-cracking sounds included), until her head has rotated upside down. As if that wasn't enough, she grows giant freaking spider legs (which have to be blown off during the fight), and attacks by shooting Rubees at the player from SOME orifice of her body. All in all, Mimi's freaky transformation into an even freakier monster stands out for the entire game.

Drop by next week for a new countdown.

I gotta play more Wario... just to check out zombie-Wario!! He looks ca-ute with his fork, as opposed to how scary re-deads are.
