Gender: Posts: 4,042 Thanks: 95 Thanked 74 Times in 36 Posts | New Twist on Super Mario 64: Avoid the Green Demon A group of Japanese gamers have come up with a new, frightening challenge for Super Mario 64. If you recall, the hidden 1-Up Mushrooms in this game (that is, any one that isn't lying around in plain sight) will move toward you shortly after appearing. Normally, you gladly accept the fungus and its gift of an extra Mario, so what you may not know is that if, instead, you decide to run away from the mushroom, it will follow you no matter where you go. The only way to escape it is either to die, quit, or complete the level. So these Japanese gamers have made a game of finding a 1-Up Mushroom and trying to complete the 8 red coin missions in various levels without being caught by the "Green Demon" (Midori no Akuma). And of course they have posted videos of their escapades for all to enjoy. Naturally the commentaries are in Japanese, but the aforementioned rules of the game are all you really need to know to understand what's happening. I am so trying this when I go home for break next week. |

I could have sworn there were times I'd try to avoid the 1-ups when they'd chase me in SM64, and they'd disappear after a while. |

Reminds me of how I usually insist on getting several bullet bills on the screen in SMB 1 and racing them to the end of the level. |

I've been working on Cool, Cool Mountain for a while today. I have managed to get all the coins, but was caught before reaching the star. It's a doozy. Very fun, highly recommended. |

Probably took me a combined total of 3-4 hours playtime. I've done about 30 minutes work on Whomp's Fortress, and my record so far is five coins. |
