^^ Actually, recently characters like Dixie, Tiny and Funky Kong (if not more characters) have been making appearances, though mainly as characters in sports or Mario Kart games.
Beyond DK64, the games have really nothing to do with being, well, Donkey Kong. Those feel like a half-assed spinoff of Mario Paint(in a really bad way)

As for Diddy Kong Racing, it IS a spinoff, but the storyline seems to not fit directly into the DKverse. I know some spinoffs of games can fit rather well, but this one...doesn't.

^Regarding DKR, I'd say the DS version in particular fits into the DK universe pretty well, what with the addition of two Kongs to the lineup and the new DK-esque extra race tracks.

The N64 version is kind of an odd case, I grant you.

The original DK series, yes.
I like to think that Mario hasn't seen the Kongs since DK Jr. kicked his butt so long ago. (With an exception being made for the Mario vs Donkey Kong series)
The Donkey Kong Country series (and it's spin-offs) I don't consider to be part of Mario's world, despite my love of those games.
And I like to think that Diddy's laid-back, tie-wearing uncle is DK Jr., and Cranky is the original, Mario-battling Donkey Kong.

^ So, in which game did DK and the gang get sucked into a different world? Right after DK Jr. beat Mario's ass? I must have missed that game.

Actually it was Mario who went to another World. DK went and made his own island.

And I guess that Mario just came back to kick his ass a few times? Right.

And besides, even if any of that is true, they made too much contact with whatever canon thd series provides to just say they're seperate.

Mega Man and Mario? Yeah. Seperate.

Yoshi and Mario? Same universe, wether he branched off or not.

Donkey Kong has an unknown way of getting to the Mushroom Kingdom and back.

And Yoshi =/= DK. Nice try though.

So, from your own mouth..er, fingers, they're basically world traveling rivals? Sounds like they're of one 'gamingverse' to me.

And I think someone earlier mentioned Yoshi; think of it as a late response, remixed into an example. DK and Yoshi have a very similar situation anyway.

Speaking of Mario and Yoshi being of the same universe; wasn't there a Baby DK" featured in a Mario/Yoshi game on DS? Hm.

I firmly believe DK to be integrated with Mario.

So, how did Donkey/Cranky Kong battle with Mario on Real Earth?

Either Mario and DK, simultaneously or at differing time periods, were taken to a seperate world from Earth; to Mushroom Kingdom (meaning "Donkey Kong Country" exists somewhere in the Mushroom Kingdom). Or they were taken to their new respective worlds seperately. In either case, perhaps they can travel to and from, at will, their worlds to Earth.

What a nerdy theory I created. But at least possible, if not likely.

Except Mario didn't travel through any worlds until after the Donkey Kong.

I guess Donkey Kong's series could be in the same world as the Mushroom Kingdom, but there is barely any reference to Mario in Donkey game's games and DK has only shown up in "non-canon" games.

Well, after DK Jr. you mean. But the seperate times mean nothing really.

I believe Mario's hat was available for purchase in DKC2. Yoshi's Island DS, and the DK/Mario games for the handhelds should be enough (I'm sure they are canon) even without including spin-offs.

I also recall SSB's character bios stating that DK and Mario have reconciled their differences, further cementing a relationship between the games.

Besides, they could merely choose not to interact much as of late for reasons undetermined.

Donkey Kong 64 was the last DK game Rare developed for Nintendo before being acquired by Microsoft (unless you count Diddy Kong Racing DS, which was really more of a port). Most of the DK games made since have been done by Paon.

Donkey Kong Country was mostly so Donkey Kong could have a series along with Mario. So, yeah, maybe DK does live in the same world as Mario, but it's not explained too much.

I blame Miyamoto hating DK so much

You could also say that, since Mario's the protagonist of the first game, he's the real star and it's his game.

I'm going to say that yes, maybe the DK series is somewhat connected to Mario, but no more than from the original DK arcade game. Yoshi and Wario are different things, because Yoshi is supposed to be in the same universe is (Yoshi's Island and Yoshi's Story both had Baby Bowser as the final boss!) However, I'm not quite sure of YIDS should count or not, considering it had Baby DK.

Wario is somewhat less connected than Yoshi, but is still more connected than DK.

Also DKC isn't part of the Mario universe, are you kidding me when have you seen a Kremling in a main Mario game (or a koopa in DKC)

Personally, video game series are limited only to games in which the character has a starring role, be it as a villain or a hero.

Hence Mario and DK share series. In the DK-only games it's outside the Marioverse, in Mario-only games it's outside the DKverse. It only makes sense, unless we accept the (crazy) premise that K. Rool could attack Mario or Bowser would directly attack DK.

^Don't let Nintendo see that post or we'll be getting a new crossover series.
