Yeah, I checked Wikipedia after your mentioning of Conker, and I do realize that Conker's game had already been in development before DKR ("Conker's Quest"). However, his first appearance technically marks him in the universe. Even further, a possible technicality one could sort of force, is that sure, "Conker's Quest" was in production before DKR was released, but maybe once DKR was released, Rare probably decided to scrap the idea for CQ and rehaul it (hence him still being childish in DKR; otherwise if they had decided to make him adult-themed before DKR's release, he wouldn't have been in it), and even obviously change the name, to "Conker's Bad Fur Day." Which would mean, to me at least, that the game which was in develoment was in a sense, destroyed, allowing his first true game to be DKR, albeit by accident/poor timing.

Ah, but Conker's Pocket Tales for Game Boy Color did, in fact, see release shortly after Diddy Kong Racing. So even though the E-rated version of Conker's solo GameCube game was ultimately scrapped, he still was in development with the handheld game at the time.

And it's Metal Mario. Yup, the one from Nintendoland Main.

bottom line: DK series branched from mario, therefore is considered part of the marioverse. you can check mariowiki.com. In the article Mushroom World, they include places where DK games took place.

Just an update on relevant information:

I may be the last to the party on this one, but I just learned that Dixie Kong, Tiny Kong, Funky Kong, King K. Rool, and Kritter are all playable characters in the Wii's Mario Super Sluggers. Also, Funky Kong is playable in Mario Kart Wii.

I always knew that the DK games were part of the greater Mario universe, but it's nice to see Nintendo validating that by finally including some of the secondary DK characters (that is, characters besides DK and Diddy) into the Mario sports titles.
