Do you consider the DK series part of the Marioverse?

A lot of places consider the Donkey Kong series to be seperate from the Mario series. However, I've always thought that DK was just a Mario spinoff and nothing more. Also, most of these same place lump the Yoshi and Wario series in with Mario.

So what's your opinion on this controversial topic?

Of course they are. Nintendo just keeps them as seperate as possible to pretend like they have five seperate franchises from Yoshi, DK, Wario, even Luigi and Peach to a certain extent.

I consider Mario part of the DK series.

(and yes, I am aware he was called "Jumpman" back then. Changing the name means nothing)

Eh, I tend to think of them separately.

Mario Kart features DK and all other Mario spinoff stars.

MARIO. Kart.

Yeah, but the universes aren't really connected other than they 'know' each other. Totally different environments and styles (at least from what I remember, it's been a while since I've played any Donkey Kong).

I don't care if you see them as a spin-off, I've just always regarded the series as separate.

I supposed they would technically be the same, since they both originated from the same game.

If anything, Mario is a spin-off of Donkey Kong.

To me, Donkey Kong is just a Mario game with a "Donkey Kong" title.

Mario is the protagonist, after all.

Well, in reference to that point - why don't we say "Link" games rather than "Zelda", then? After all, he is the main protagonist... some games, she's not even in!

On a more serious note, though...just as 'Plummer Man' is actually "Mario", why can't 'Donkey Kong' just be "King Kong" whose name had to be changed due to copyright laws?

I highly doubt it's the same Kong - would you really invite the (evil) guy who kidnapped one of your girlfriends to ride go-karts with you?

I'm more thinking, the developers were like, "We have this giant monkey, let's take this idea, make him good, and run with it" more than it was a "man, let's spin this off the Mario game, but have the universes still be vaguely connected", y'know?

I consider Donkey Kong separate due to the fact it has enough stand-alone games to be considered a separate series. Wario is the same, but I don't consider Yoshi the same.

also, I thought Cranky was confirmed to be the original DK, and Donkey to be Jr, or maybe I'm crazy.

The DK series is now totally independent of the Mario Series. Cranky Kong is the original Donkey Kong from the arcade game, and he's way past his prime. That was Nintendo's way of saying "All right guys, that game still exists, but let's move on now, mmkay?"

If you don't think DK and Mario are separate franchises, I advise you to go play Donkey Kong Country.

ZG: The reason DK and Bowser were in Mario Kart is unknown story-wise, but my mention of it was to make a point: Any game with Mario in the title features, mainly, only Mario-universe charcters, not, say, Pit. Never are there other Nintendo characters in a Mario titled spinoff.

And, March of the Minis, anyone? Thought it was a Mario/DK game. =|

Mario vs. Donkey Kong, anybody? I liked it.

Also, if memory serves, Mario was the villain of Donkey Kong Jr.

And remember, "I'm-a Luigi, number one!"

The only reason people dispute this is all those f***ing horrible Bonga racing games they've been throwing at us like rotten eyeballs recently. If Rare hadn't abandoned ship or somebody competent made a worthy sequel to the DKC series, nobody would question its separateness.

Heck, even the silly DK64 reinforced the separateness. Today? It's hard to say Donkey Kong functions much as a character anymore.
