His only real star appearance was in Wario's Woods, an obscure SNES puzzle game which featured Toad as the hero opposite the villain Wario. Apart from that role, Toad has has frequently appeared in Mario Kart, Party and sports games, but has had few roles in any mainstream games since SMB2 other than incompetent castle guard or messenger every time Peach gets herself kidnapped. #9: Daisy ![]() "HI, I'M DAISY!" Our fair lady of Sarasaland hasn't been getting the royal treatment since her appearance as damsel in distress in Super Mario Land. In fact, since her reappearance in Mario Tennis for the N64, all she's done is appear in multiplayer Mario games. Nevermind the potential romance between her and Luigi, it seems she can't quite get herself kidnapped again so the guy in green can save her. Maybe Peach should swap places with Daisy and give Mario a rest. #8: Luigi ![]() *gasp* We have a list of the most neglected characters, and everyone's favorite shadow Luigi only ranks eighth? Luckily, we live in a time much different than the one Jay Resop did over a decade ago when he coined the term "Neglected Mario Characters". Luigi has starred in a game of his own since that awful Mario is Missing, and has even had a much greater role to play in recent games. Even so, he still always has to play second fiddle to his big bro. Will Luigi ever get to stand in the limelight all by himself again? Only time will tell. #7: Captain Syrup ![]() Captain Syrup appeared as the true villain in Wario Land, and again in Wario Land 2, before suddenly vanishing from the Marioverse. Not only did Captain Syrup feature the wit and greed to match Wario's brute strength and... well, also greed, she was also the first real female villain in a Mario (Wario?) game. The pirate woman disappeared for a long time after WL2, but recently reappeared as an ally (or so it seems) to Wario in the Wii game Wario Land: Shake It!! Perhaps this means she'll be making a comeback soon... #6: Pauline ![]() I don't know what it is about Mario, but he's had a lot of girlfriends in his career. And who could forget the first, Pauline? She was the girl crying "HELP!" from the top of the skyscraper while the dastardly ape Donkey Kong tossed barrels down at Mario. When the game was ended, Mario and Pauline would kiss, and all seemed well, did it not? Apparently not, since Mario got sucked down a toilet and ended up in the Mushroom Kingdom not long after, with a new girlfriend to boot. But it seems Nintendo hasn't forgotten their own Fay Wray, for Pauline has recently reappeared in Mario vs. Donkey Kong 2, where, yes, she does get kidnapped by Donkey Kong. I guess it's just a role she knows how to play, eh? #5: Geno ![]() Probably the coolest possessed toy ever, Geno was a character in Super Mario RPG who had been sent to earth by "a higher authority" to reclaim the fallen pieces of the Star Roads from Smithy's gang, and came to inhabit a child's doll. Geno proved himself to be one of the most badass Mario characters ever made, and had some of the coolest moves as well, including the 9999-critical-hit-damage Geno Whirl. At the end of the game, with his job done, Geno left the body of the doll and ascended back up to the heavens, so it seems unlikely he'll be called back down anytime soon. It would be cool for him to reappear in a future game, as fans seems to agree. Geno did make a brief cameo appearance in Mario and Luigi: Superstar Sage, however. #4: Kamek ![]() You'd think the earliest enemy of the Mario Bros. would get more attention, but I suppose not. Kamek, head of the Magikoopas, foresaw the damage the Mario twins would have on the Koopa Kingdom, and sought to have them both eliminated as babies. However, he was only able to capture younger twin Luigi, with Mario accidentally falling into the paws of Yoshi. Baby Mario and Yoshi eventually caught up with Baby Luigi after giving both Kamek and Baby Bowser what for. Now, it seems, Kamek hasn't had too much of a job in the Marioverse, besides making sporadic appearances in Mario sidegames. #3: The Koopalings ![]() I can still remember all their names: Larry, Morton, Iggy, Lenny, Wendy, Roy, and Ludwig. These seven monsters first appeared in Super Mario Bros. 3 and later in Super Mario World in similar roles as the guardians of seven end-of-world levels, followed by their dad. They also appeared in several other games to make trouble, but never really did anything for a while. Then, in Super Mario Sunshine, had Nintendo seemingly retconned the Koopalings away with the use of the new Bowser Jr. as King Koopa's only child. This theme has persisted since, and it seems like there's little hope of getting to see the seven original Koopalings again, although they did make an unexpected and offbeat appearance in Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga. #2: Donkey Kong Jr. ![]() Donkey Kong's son starred as the hero in the arcade game Donkey Kong 2, in which he tries to rescue his father from the villain (Mario, go figure). Donkey Kong Jr. later appeared in a series of his own edutainment games. He was one of the original racers in Super Mario Kart, and even appeared in Mario Tennis alongside his pop. Strangely, though, he hasn't appeared much since, especially considering his dad is Donkey Kong. Maybe child custody issues? #1: Waluigi ![]() Of all the characters on this list, Waluigi is the ONLY ONE who has never even been in a real game before. Since his original appearance as Wario's sidekick in Mario Tennis, Waluigi has only ever appeared in multiplayer sports, Kart and Party games, and occasionally a few others. He made it as an Assist Trophy in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, and played probably his biggest role yet in Dance Dance Revolution: Mario Mix as the boss of Story Mode. Despite all this, however, Waluigi has been stuck to sidegames, usually as a lame playable character. How long is it before we get a Waluigi Land? More importantly, who would ever want a Waluigi Land? It seems that poor Waluigi isn't just one of the lamest Mario characters, he is also one of the most neglected. |

Maybe I'll compile and post all the contradictions in the different games sometime. |

Anyway, I think it's safe to say that pretty much EVERY RPG character is neglected. Aside from small cameos in their sequels and/or Super Smash Bros. Brawl, these characters are never seen again, despite the fact that they have LOADS of potential. What, is it written somewhere that they can't be used again or something? | |

He's filler incarnate, and does nothing for the canon storyline. Because of that, even some are infuriated that he was more than a regular trophy in Brawl, being an assist. I don't have a problem playing as him, etc., but it'd be nice if he played a role in a canon game(be it even an unlockable in the WarioWare games, which, by the way, are canon, unlike Mario Party). |

See, Waluigi is the ultimate anti-Luigi. Not only does he do the exact opposite of the underdog in the games he's in (the cocky jerk), he vies for control of who is most Neglected! Hm. Should make a comic about this! |
