Top Ten List #10: Neatest Tricks

I was gone last Sunday, so that's why there was no Top Ten then. However, we continue now with the Top Ten Neatest Tricks from any Mario game.

Week #10 (Week of 03-29-09)
Top Ten Neatest Tricks

Ever see somebody do something in a game and say, "Wow, I didn't know you could do that," or "How did you pull that off?" These are some of the most famous and coolest tricks, moves and glitches in the Mario series. Ever pulled any of these off?

#10: Warp Vases (Super Mario Bros. 2)

These large vases seemed to replace Warp Pipes in SMB2. Ducking into most would take you to the vase's giant interior, usually carrying an item or a Phanto's key. Generally, vases can't be used while in the Subspace, but there were certain vases in certain worlds that became Warp Vases, teleporting you to a future world. I can still remember the first time I discovered Warp Vases as a kid. BLEW MY MIND.

#9: Warp Whistles (Super Mario Bros. 3)

Warping sure is fun, isn't it? In SMB3, there were three Warp Whistles hidden throughout the game: the first hidden at the end of World 1-3, the second in a secret room in the Grass Land Fortress, and the final held by a Fire Bro. in a secret area of Desert Land. Using these whistles will warp you to the Warp Zone, where you can choose from a variety of worlds to visit. Fun fact: in the Japanese version of SMB3, there is actually a fourth whistle, hidden in World 5-1.

#8: Infinite 1-ups

Extra lives are a treasure in the Mushroom Kingdom. Luckily for us, there are ways to cheat the system and make an infinite number of extra lives. The tricks appear in various games, though often times are very similar. They can involve jumping on a shell at a certain point so it bounces off a surface and you automatically hit it again, resulting in an eventual increase in lives; it can involve jumping on enemies at an infinite enemy spawn location (like a pipe) and using a floating powerup like Raccoon Mario to float from one to another, eventually gaining lives; and it can involve a scenario where you could gain two lives, then die, and repeat the process, slowly resulting in a profit of lives. The prospects are endless!

#7: Super Yoshi (Super Mario World)

Occasionally, a naked Koopa Troopa will attempt to climb into an empty yellow shell, resulting in a spinning, flashing, nearly-invincible obstacle. Mario would do well to avoid these enemies, but Yoshi can just gobble them up. Doing so results in the combined effect of holding a red, blue and yellow shell in Yoshi's mouth. You can fly, you can perform ground stomps, and when you spit out the shel you'll shoot fireballs (YUM). It's an awesome ability to have, and there are levels where it can be exploited, like Awesome in the Special World.

#6: Swimming under the ship (Super Mario Bros. 3)

The Battleship in World 8 of SMB3 is but the second in a long line of imposing military machines found in Bowser's Dark Land. The Battleship appears to float in a sea of lava, guns firing into the air. But surprisingly... that isn't lava at all. It's just water colored red. Go figure, huh? This red water can actually be swam in, and the entire level can even be bypassed by simply swimming under the ships as they move by. You can't see yourself underwater, though, so you must be careful. At the end, you can simply hop up onto the back of the ship and enter the end pipe.

#5: Geno Whirl Critical (Super Mario RPG)

Geno Whirl is Geno's third special attack, learned at Level 11. With this attack, Geno hurls an energy disk at a single enemy, causing moderate damage. If a precise timed hit is performed, though, the attack will do an automatic 9999 damage, enough to defeat any monster in the game. The attack works on all regular enemies in the game, but not bosses with the exception of Exor and clones of Yaridovich. This special trick requires exact timing, and can take a few tries to get right, but the end result is just pure awesome.

#4: Kill Screen (Donkey Kong)

A kill screen is a stage in a video game (usually an arcade game) that causes the game to crash, due to a programming error or an oversight during game design, often caused by simple integer overflows. The original Donkey Kong arcade game featured a kill screen on the 22nd stage, on screen 117. Ironically, the game had been designed to prevent an integer overflow from occurring, but a kill screen did appear from a different kind of glitch, caused by an overflow in the level timer. Reaching a kill screen is difficult, but possible for either a skilled or lifeless player. The DK kill screen is featured in the documentary film The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters.

#3: 100 Super Jumps (Super Mario RPG)

The Chow in Monstro Town presents Mario with what is probably the toughest challenge in the game, which involves performing a series of consecutive Super Jumps against a single enemy in battle, which is achieved by timing each hit precisely. After 30 consecutive jumps, you're awarded with the Attack Scarf accessory, which boosts all stats by 30. Pretty hax, huh? Now, if you can actually keep a Super Jump going for 100 total hits, you'll receive the Super Suit, which is arguably the best equipment in the game. It raises Speed by 30 and all other stats by 50. Very few people have either the skill nor the patience to complete this quest, but those who do are greatly rewarded.

#2: Beating the game with 16 stars (Super Mario 64)

Believe it or not, it is possible to beat SM64 with only 16 stars, when you're supposed to be able to beat it with a minimum of 70 stars. No cheats or hacks are necessary, just the exploiting of a few in-game glitches. All that's needed is the minimum stars necessary to get past the locked doors, and then it's possible to bypass most of the game in under half an hour. Eight stars are needed to reach Bowser the first time, then 16 to make Mips the rabbit appear. Mips can be used in a glitch to bypass the door to the 2nd Bowser, and after the 2nd locked door, you use a backwards long jump glitch to bypass the 3rd locked door and the Endless Stairs, to the final Bowser. You can view a video of the entire trick here.

#1: Finding the Minus World (Super Mario Bros.)

By now, who hasn't heard of the Minus World? The bizarre World -1 is found by exploiting a glithc at the end of World 1-2. You stand on the pipe leading to the flagpole at the end of the level, with a block or two before the one furthest right broken. Simply jump while facing left, and move right against the side of the pipe. Mario will slide through the wall, emerging in the Warp Zone on the opposite side. Upon entering the pipe furthest left, you will enter World -1, which is a duplicate of the water level 2-2, though entering the pipe at the end simply returns you to the beginning. The level is never-ending. Basically all that's left to do after reaching this level is reset. The Minus World glitch has come to be one of the most famous in the world, and any self-proclaimed Mario fan be damned if he hasn't at least attempted it before.

That's all for this week, come back next for more fun.

^ That one is tool-assisted. The one I posted was done using an unaltered, unassisted game.

No mention of SM64's face stretching, eh?
That always creeped me out.
