Top Ten List #11: Most Memorable Boss Battles

Week #11 (Week of 04-05-09)
Top Ten Most Memorable Boss Battles

There are just some bosses in the Mario series that stand out in peoples' minds, for whatever reason. This list counts down some of the most memorable boss battles in the Mario series.

#10: Cloud N. Candy (Yoshi's Story)

Aside from having one of the lamest designs of any Mario boss, Cloud N. Candy is memorable for being one of the easiest bosses in any game. All the boss does is lazily hop around the stage, and being a giant ball of cotton candy, Yoshi is naturally supposed to eat him. So, after a few seconds of licking up chunks of him (which recover your health), Cloud N. Candy completely disappears into Yoshi's belly, and the battle is over. Kind of anti-climactic for a boss fight, huh?

#9: Tubba Blubba (Paper Mario)

Tubba Blubba was bullied and abused by the Boos of Gusty Gulch, but when Bowser came along with the Star Rod, he helped him by removing the one thing which made him frightened of the ghosts: his heart. Without his heart holding him back, Tubba Blubba went on to exact his revenge, devouring all the Boos he came across. When it came time for Mario and co. to defeat him, they had to find his heart and reunite it with him. Once they do, Tubba Blubba was weakened again, and was able to be defeated. It's hard to say what's more memorable about this battle, the oddness of it, or the creepy fact that you have to fight a disembodied organ.

#8: Waluigi (Dance Dance Revolution: Mario Mix)

That's right, Waluigi as a boss. Waluigi actually played a major role in the Story Mode of DDR: Mario Mix, where he stole the four wish-granting Music Keys from the Truffle Tower, with hopes of hypnotizing the world with his mad dance moves. Unfortunately, Waluigi is a terrible dancer, so he ended up losing three of the keys. Waluigi serves as a boss in game, showing off his crazy dancing to Mario and Luigi. Once defeated, he loses his treasure and the heroes are that much closer to saving the world again.

#7: Bundt (Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars)

The Mario series has had a lot of strange enemies in the past... but a giant cake? Bundt is prepared by the chefs of Marrymore for the wedding of Booster and Princess Toadstool, which mysteriously came to life halfway through the ceremony. The monster had some surprisingly powerful attacks for a cake, but had an alternative method of being defeated. Bundt was defeated by blowing out all of its candles, leaving the raspberry base layer of the cake behind, which is quickly eaten whole by a hungry Booster.

#6: Underchomp (Super Paper Mario)

In the test given by Dorguy the Third in the Underwhere, Mario and his friends must battle the monstrous, three-headed Underchomp. However, this battle doesn't play out the same as most battles in the game. The fight takes place in the form of a parody of an 8-bit RPG battle (think Mother for the NES). The battle is turn-based, and narrated in a box at the top of the screen. Each of the three heads has their own unique attack, and the player can choose a variety of special moves from both the main characters and acquired Pixls. Using the hidden Pixl Piccolo puts the Underchomp to sleep for a few turns, making the battle much easier. Sadly, this is the only battle of this kind in the game, but is still a heck of a lot of fun.

#5: Prince Froggy (Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island)

Prince Froggy awaited the arrival of Baby Mario and Yoshi in the castle halfway through World 3 of Yoshi's Island. Much to our heroes' surprise, though, Kamek didn't have a growing trick for the monster this time, but instead a shrinking trick for them. Once shrunken, Baby Mario and Yoshi are promptly eaten by Prince Froggy. The battle actually takes place inside Prince Froggy's stomach, where Yoshi must dodge drops of stomach acid and shoot eggs at the amphibian's uvula. After a certain number of hits, Prince Froggy finally gives and coughs up Yoshi and the baby. I didn't know Kamek was into that sort of thing...

#4: King K. Rool (Donkey Kong Country)

It takes some kind of villain to fall down defeated, let the credits roll, then jump back up and attack you again. The nasty King K. Rool is fought on the pirateship final world of the game, Gangplank Galleon. After surviving a few rounds and attacking the crocodile king, he collapses on the ground, seemingly done in. A strange set of credits slides up the screen, and then he bounces back up and attacks again, by the time the player has probably assumed victory and put the controller down. Sneaky, nasty, backhanded... but damn, if you don't love him for it.

#3: Culex (Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars)

A lot of people were thrilled to hear that Square was to collaborate with Nintendo to produce a Mario RPG. And even though it's a Mario game being made, wouldn't it be nice if Square left something of theirs behind? That came in the form of Culex, Dark Knight of Vanda, a monster from the Final Fantasy universe created (although created only for this game). He appears in Monstro Town behind a sealed door, and challenges Mario to a duel. He is joined in battle by four elemental crystals (a staple of the Final Fantasy series), and the music is the boss track from Final Fantasy 4. When you beat Culex, the victory theme from the series even plays. Upon being defeated, Culex gives Mario the Quartz Charm accessory and returns to his own realm.

#2: Bowser (Super Mario 64)

Bowser's first appearance in terrifying 3D was made in Super Mario 64, where he waited for Mario at the end of each of his three dark realms. Who could ever forget running around Bowser, grabbing his tail, spinning him around and then launching him at one of the bombs circling the stage? Bowser's attacks included his traditional firebreathing, along with creating shockwaves, teleporting, and even breaking off chunks of the stage. After being bombed enough times, Bowser disappears, leaving behind either a key to the next level of Peach's Castle, or in the final battle, one last Power Star.

#1: Bowser (Super Mario Bros.)

What could be more memorable than grabbing Bowser by the tail and spinning him around? Knocking him into lava, of course. At the end of each castle in the original Super Mario Bros., King Koopa bounced around a bridge suspended over a pool of lava, breathing fire and sometimes throwing hammers. Mario had to find away either over or under Bowser to get to the axe which would cut the bridge down, sending the Koopa King to his doom. He could also be defeated using fireballs, and through this method it is revealed that the first seven King Koopas are actually just regular enemies disguised as their king. It's only at the very last castle that you get to fight the real Koopa king, and drop his green ass in some lava.

That's all for now, come back next week for the next countdown.

I thought the first two Bowser battles in NSMB were pretty memorable (watching Bowser's skin burn off then fighting his skeleton? Awesome!) and SMG's final boss was easy, but the epic feel of it (thanks in no small part to the music) stuck in my mind. But then again, I have a tendency to ignore most Mario games that aren't platformers, RPGs, or kart racing.
What I really liked about the Prince Froggy battle was Yoshi and Mario's terrified expression after being crapped out.
And that cake gave me so much trouble back when I was a kid and didn't realize the important of upgrading armor, weapons, and stats that weren't HP.

^ Because Donkey Kong is a Mario character. Diddy Kong is a Mario character. The DK games are as much a part of the Mario franchise as the branched-out Wario or Yoshi games.

Mario was a spin off of the Donkey Kong franchise, though. So that makes Mario a Donkey kong character. Whatever. We all have our own views on the subject.

Anyway.... I've always hated Bundt. Such a pain in the ***. Well, for me anyway.
