Ask a stupid Mario question, get a stupid Mario answer

Yep, inspired by whoever made the first one, in this topic you get to ask me any question about the Mario series or anything related, and I'll answer them to the best of my abilities. Ask me about the games, the developers, the comics, the cartoons, the motion picture, the fan stuff, or my pathetic life leading into adulthood playing Mario games.

Ask away.

Mario wears red because of the palette restrictions in the original Donkey Kong game. They wanted to be able to tell Mario's shirt and overalls apart, so they used red and blue. Originally his shirt was blue and his pants were red, yet for some reason they swapped a few times before becoming the same red shirt/blue pants scheme present to this day.

And my tags are awesome, thank you.

All right, I'll put you through your paces with another pallette question...

If there is a 4-color limit on NES sprites, how come Mario, Luigi, and Peach had white around their eyes in SMB2?

^ That doesn't conflict with anything at all. Look very closely at the sprites and count the colors you see:

Mario: Burgundy (cap and shirt), orange (skin and buttons), dark blue (pants and outline), white (eyes)
Luigi: Lime green (cap and shirt), apricot (skin and buttons), dark blue (pants and outline), white (eyes)
Peach: Pink (dress, lips and earrings), apricot (skin and crown), brown (hair and outline), white (eyes)

Each character sprite set features only four colors in the original NES game. (Oddly enough, Toad's sprites only use three colors.)

What, male Yoshis can't be pink, and all pink have to be female? That's so chauvinistic of you.

But seriously, though, who knows? There's been very little in the Mario games to show or suggest a difference between "male" and "female" Yoshis, so it's impossible to say. Maybe they're asexual?

What's the deal with Toads? They all look the same. And speak the same. and they seem to have lost their super strength from SMB2.

But the 4th color is almost always used as transparency (except for level tiles, or if you're supposed to play as a rectangle). Toad's is the only sprite that make sense.

Rapecopter Who knows? Apparently he's Wario's brother, though.

Not sure. Originally they were all referred to as "Mushroom Retainers", while the character Toad was just "Toad". Now, they're all called "Toads". The character Toad is still Toad, it's just everyone else is a Toad too.

The same thing happened with Yoshi.

As a matter of fact, NES sprites could have four colors plus a transparent color. In some cases, as many as six colors could be present. The NES's PPU featured four selectable sets of three colors for sprites, as well as four sets of three colors for tiles, and one background color (a total of 25 colors out of the system's 64) to be used on one scanline. Who knows? The citizens of the Mushroom Kingdom apparently like to flush their money down the toilets for it to end up in sewer pipes for Mario to find, apparently.
